I agree with ron

zero tolerance for mean roos.

breeding with them is a no for me. they always get quieter in the small whie coop
the only reason I tolerate mine is because I know he wasn't mean before I got him. I think he just knows that on not the person that raised him and she babied him. I try to baby him but he hasn't let me too much yet.

@Sally Sunshine I am just about certain the thermometers are right. I have three. Two of which are spot checks and both have same reading when doing an oral temp on myself and in wigglers in my mini and cooler. I was freaking out last night so I just moved all the eggs to the coolerbator.

And here in about an hour I am calling brinsea to send this 20 in for service since it's still under warranty.

I'm sure all is well...maybe a little slowed down, but okay. Every hatch-a-long I tell the story of my unplugging the bator due to an overnight power outage. I left for the rest of the day. That night Blarneyeggs suggested I plug it back in and just see if anything grows. I did, and they hatched. It's amazing what they can tolerate.

For no reason I can fathom, all my thermos are showing different temps, even though they all started out *exactly* the same. No clue what caused it, and no clue how to fix it. We're talking 3-4 degrees!

Only 1/3 of my eggs were growing, and now it looks like most of those are early quitters. I'm not tossing anything yet, but when the veins start to turn into smears, it's kind of obvious.

My NYD hatch rate was 82% of eggs set. 88% of fertile/developing eggs. So you can imagine this is hard for me.

On top of that, we lost two of our NYD chicks today. Our dog got them. One was my son's favorite Cochin/Silkie roo. And he was the one who discovered its torn open body with guts hanging out. Another chick is missing, and we think the dog got that one too. All around awful day.

That is a bad day...you need a drink!

Quote: There are too many good roos out there that need a home and are having to become dinner for lack of homes to give up yard space to a nasty roo. I used to tolerate nasty roos too until I got my Spike and realized there were such sweet roos out there. Now I have 2 extremely friendly roos that follow myself and my kids around like puppies.

I have 10/10 developing.

And one Ancona is finally fully out of it's shell and cuddling my dh, but here is a pic of it in my hand.

I PRAY I can get my ducks to hatch!!! I want to sooo badly!

I am lost. We had to go to TSC tonight to get feed for the meaties. They had a tub of bantam chicks. Some Splash Cochins. One white Japanese. One white Silky. Some Blue Cochins. Some that appear to be Blue d'uccles. One I couldn't identify. I rationalized that I had one empty brooder and isolation is only two weeks long....... It's all over now, isn't it?
I just remind myself that I got rid of my bantams because I needed their coop and DH is NOT going to build me another coop for them, lol!

Oh boy! Sounds like you didn't have a good day. Sorry you lost some chickens, that's never easy.

WOW! Im shoked your TSC company actually labels the chick bins or even know what they are? My TSC labels them pullets, bantams, ducklings. after that they have no clue. I avoid chick days because these people have no clue about chickens it drives me batty. Unless you indentified them on your own, sounds more likely lol.

X2 on mean roos. I do not tolerate it. First my roosters need to be docile enough to have my children around them and second I will not breed from a bad tempered rooster.

Love them all!!!!!!! : ) great shots!
X2 Beautiful pictures.

I missed the wet fowl contest by 10 hours.....sooooooo bummed about that, well, whatever, lol, these are the pics that were going to be there lol.

Bummer!

Can you not re-calibrate? you have to be careful of averages, sometimes they can make you too low and too low is worse than say 102. I am not sure which thermos you have so I am not much help. But I threw a ton of calibration methods in the hatching 101 article. Let us know how you make out with temps please.

omg!!! aweee this is horrible! My dogs are a pain as well! we have springers :(

OH YAYY she is out!! did you vent sex her?

Update ! Candled this morning 6/6 Crested Cream Legbar are developing.........crossed fingers for lots of little girls.
Oh I pray you have more luck than I! I keep having 85% males! frustrating! I have order for females and I feel bad not being able to deliver! and then all the roos!! ugggg

So I dared candle the 10 eggs in the tiny Bator and 7 of them look great, only you can clearly see the chicks all on the X side, so I think I am not turning them enough, we do it at least once a day. Is it too late for them now? Did we mess them up? Is there a correction?

2 look empty
1 has the red circle of death.

Not pulling them till day 10 though.
Turning is very important at the beginning of incubation, I wouldnt fret about the embryo location at this point, you may want to read how turning does effect them for the future so you can set up a turning schedule.

Always in the Hatching 101 article

a paste from that

Setting Eggs & Turning
It is important to ALWAYS wash your hands before handling your hatching eggs!
It is likewise important to SANITIZE your incubator AND equipment before AND after use!

Omphalitis, yolk sack infection is caused by a bacterium that enters through the porous egg shell and easily kills embryo's and newly hatched chicks. Unfortunately, incubation conditions are ideal for breeding bacteria as well as incubating eggs.

WHY IS EGG TURNING IMPORTANT EVEN WITH SHIPPED EGGS?

Failure to turn eggs during incubation CLEARLY reduces hatchability in every scholarly study and every clinical trial. REMINDER to see the Shipped eggs section of the article and to treat every shipped egg differently as its air cell is presented to you!

Also SEE HERE for DETAILED Scientific explanations of WHY TURNING IS IMPORTANT!
HUBBARDS GUIDES: http://www.hubbardbreeders.com/managementguides/Incubation%20guide%20(english).pdf

WHAT FACTORS ARE IMPORTANT FOR EGG TURNING?
Frequency of Turning, Angle of Turning, Smoothness/Gentleness of Turning
SIGNS OF TURNING INADEQUACY
Increased Deaths
Malpositions
Sticky Chicks due to unabsorbed Albumen

The effects of turning during a critical period for turning, from 3 to 7 days of incubation, were also recorded. Generally, failure to turn eggs retarded growth of the area vasculosa. Turning during the critical period stimulated the extent of growth of the area vasculosa by day 7 of incubation and of subsequent embryonic growth by day 14. Incubation at low temperature resulted both in reduced expansion of the area vasculosa and retarded embryonic growth in a pattern similar to that observed for unturned eggs. It is suggested that turning stimulates development of blood vessels in the area vasculosa via localized increases in blood pressure.

We were able to demonstrate that it is critical to turn eggs for at least the first three
days of incubation and better for the first seven. READ MORE HERE and HERE

Only add room temperature eggs to your incubator to prevent SWEATING. Sweating/Condensation weakens the egg's natural defense mechanisms, providing an ideal environment for the growth of bacteria and penetrated through the shell pores and kill the embryo. Eggs can be laid on their sides or placed in turning tray with pointed end down/big air cell end up. For shipped eggs, please refer to SHIPPED EGGS section of this article.

Mark eggs, using a pencil, with an X on one side and an O on the other. Make sure to turn the eggs at least 3 times a day, or odd number of times. Turning by hand they should always be turned an odd amount of times and move them to a different part of the tray to protect them from temperature variation. You basically roll the eggs with your fingers/palm from X to O. It is important to NOT ROLL the eggs in the same direction every time. Improper rolling can cause the chalazae that holds the yolk in place to tear. Turning the egg prevents the embryo from touching and attaching to the membrane inside the egg. The most convenient way to turn eggs is to purchase an egg turner. Take extra precautions when turning eggs during the first week of incubation. The developing embryos have delicate blood vessels that rupture easily when severely jarred or shaken, thus killing the embryo.

When adding Eggs the temperature will immediately drop. DO NOT ADJUST THE THERMOSTAT, or risk accidentally cooking them. Wait 2/4 hours and if the temperature is still low, make a small adjustment, as small as you can. (Note: Small adjustments on the manual Styrofoam incubators make BIG changes!)
