Anybody else staring at broody hens? I don't know what I'm watching for, lol. Will she get off the eggs when they're trying to hatch? It's so fascinating how they go about their broody business with such determination.

I believe they sit on them through the whole process. I don't remember my broodies ever leaving as they are hatching.

Three external pips this morning - day 20. Trying to get my humidity up a little. It's hanging out around fifty percent.

With my broodies, I only knew chicks were hatching when I heard chirping. The hens stayed glued to their eggs for another day or two until they were mostly all hatched and dried off and strong enough to stick their heads out. (Kind of what we do with incubation by not opening the top until the hatch is done.

Goodness gracious ya'll were busy talking this morning. I am somewhat slow moving today. Had one pip yesterday around 3ish. Kept watching all during work (I work at home until 11:30 or 12 at night), got up around 4 and had a teeny, tiny little doodle (this is what my mom and aunts always called baby chicks)!

Had one of the others decide it was time to pip around midnight or 2 a.m. (can't remember when exactly)

either that or upgrade the dog

I love this picture! I live in rattlesnake country. The Guineas keep the snakes back and the wild turkeys also kill snakes....Once I had a desert tortoise get out of his pen and go on a walk about. The Guineas tattled on him and told me exactly where he was.

I keep thinking about getting some guineas - even though I don't particularly like them - just because they keep ticks out and now snakes, hmmm may have to reconsider.
