Ah okay, they are duck eggs, not chicken eggs. Day 28 is totally fine for ducks. Leave them be!

Off to get myself some coffee now.

Woke up to 8 fluff balls. 4 more have hatched since then. 10 more to go.

@SoManyHats I got really good advice from @chiqita a few months back when I tried to graft a baby. If she accepts them and you can get the broody into a small space like a dog crate or a broody box where she can be safely locked in with the babies for a few day you often will get a better result because they can get to know her voice and her commands w/o endangering themselves. She told me that if they get sometime to get to know her and her voice in a safe environment then it seems to go more smoothly. Chiqita if I am misquoting you please weigh in.

Good Luck! I have very limited experience so far but what I have learned with broodies so far is you just never know.

Sticky goop

Okay, the LF are coming out just nice. But I did have one silkie 3/4 zip and died. Have a another silkie that pipped over 24 hours, so checked on it. Sticky goop is what I found all around the pip. Went ahead cleaned goop and membrane is pretty much veinless.

Why would there be sticky goop?

d'uccle had no goop and silkie that 3/4 zipped didn't. Humidity is still the same. (57)

Any suggestions?

I have brooder envy...there it is out there. Apparently I am never satisfied. Couldn't wait for broodies...filled my coops with potentials mama birds and now. I am so Jelly you could spread me on toast. I want to stare dreamily into a box and watch fuzzy babies fall asleep on their feet. I want to slip them treats and make them look forward to my hands inside their home. I want to watch them as they sort out...Lord of the Flies style...who is on top of the PO. I want to have the shock of looking in the brooder and thinking they have all died b/c they are all lying in awkward poses only to have them hop up again and start running around when they hear my voice.

( pic take from http://www.everyday-vegetable-garden.com)

I want to witness the yoga wing and leg stretch and I want to laugh at the grab and chase game when they get their first meal worms. I want to be momma hen.

What I don't want...the dust, the smell, The pine shavings that somehow reach every corner of the house...did I mention the dust and the smell?

Sigh...

I had to jump to the end. Congrats everyone on their hatches, and pips, and zips! This is what it's all about, right??? I was sad that none of my Call eggs pipped, but 1, to even give me a chance at getting them out...BUT my one little baby is sooo cute, and I'm grateful to have her. Meet Piper!! Better pics later!! My official hatch results: 1 Call Duckling
Theyre is nothing better than the satisfaction of having a lone survivor

Darling babies!  One of my broodies is a Polish mix.  She is a crack up!  What is you polish baby's other parent?

I would say Silkie or d'Uccle. I need to check its toes. My WCBlue polish is no bearded and this little darling has huge puffy cheeks.

Edited to add... It has 5 toes on each foot. I would say that the baby daddy is infact a Sultan roo I recently gave away. The Silkies have been separated for over a month.

i tried this but it didnt work. he just lay there and didnt even try to move. he is so small. i dont think he is going to make it. all the others are fine, including the other chick with crooked toes. he gets around just as well as the chicks with good feet. i think he will heal fine, but im worried about the little guy.

Have you given him water laced with poultry Nutridrench? It may be a matter of thirst and dehydration robbing him of strength. Dip his beak and see if you can get him to drink. While it is true that most chicks can survive on the absorbed yolk for a couple of days it sounds like he may have gotten the short end of the stick and needs more. The Nutridrench is awesome stuff. I saved and adult dove with it when she flew into a window and put out one of her eyes and scrambled her brains for a bit. I was able to keep her hydrated with it mixed in water and some brown sugar for two days in a dark cardboard box until I could get her to the wildlife rescue people. She had regained her since of balance and no longer had the ticks that signaled brain damage.

If you have to force feed (beak dipping not working) git a shish-ka-bob skewer (from grocery store) and use the pointed end to open the chicks mouth so you can drop the liquid in with an eyedropper. This way you won't put too much pressure on the little chicks head with your fingers. My dove figured it out and began to open her mouth for feedings but since it was very similar to how they are fed when they are young that could have been encoded memory reactivated.
