as you know eggs can vary a bit in moisture loss, perhaps this one was just a tad more than the other, if the chick looks good dont worry about it!  you already know sand is an issue, when its wet!

I wonder if the fact it was caked in mud and poo has something to do with it. And the lack of moisture loss.

#5 is out in a puddle of blood... I think it forced it's way out a bit early. Because of the other 3 playing soccer. It's yolk is fully absorbed.

After I waited the 24 hrs. I peeled enough shell and membrane away to be able to wet the inner membrane with a Qtip to get a view of the veining. At that point all had receded except for 1 big fat vein, so I put it back and waited a couple more hours. By then it had turned to a hairline, so I started zipping. I tried leaving the lid on so baby would make some kind of effort, but it didn't. I pulled it's head out and left the rest in the shell hoping it would kick out...Nope. It made absolutely no effort at all. I finally pulled it the rest of the way out. This took hours, as I was trying to give it every opportunity to take over. Once free though, within an hour or so it was up and running.
Baby #2 that pipped didn't make it. I'm sure it drowned, its face was covered in goo even though the bill was free.

I agree on the x-ray's. Wouldn't hatching be so much simpler, lol!

Baby four is out. It was super wet... Any ideas why? It's egg was covered in poo. I never had much hope for it but it's out and going nuts in the hatcher.

Wow, your just going to town over there. How many eggs went into lock down? No idea why the chick is so wet, but, oh well, it's running around!

Thank You bunches!!! I just showed it to him and he said "it looks easy enough" haha :) Yay Projects!!

Lucky!

9 went into lockdown 5 are out. 1 died over night due to malposition and underformed toes. And the other three are still moving around inside their eggs. They seem to be behind the others in development.

Good luck, more on the way. :) :)

Yep I hope so. And thank you for the luck. I've been waiting on these for a while. Im upset that out of the 5 that are out only 2 have vaulted skulls. I think the others will have small crests but these were supposed to be pure Polish so they should all have bog beautiful crests. I need the big full crests for my long term breeding project...

Silkies are the same way. If you get too high of a vault on the head it can actually be a bad thing because it leaves the birds very susceptible to head injury. The vault is a soft or open spot in the skull that puffs the skin up. In ducks, it's actually an open spot in the skull that causes the crest. Crested chickens are not quite as vulnerable as the crested ducks, but still a risk.

Polish & silkies both tend to be slow to mature, so you may not see the full crest until 8-12 months old. Give them time, they will likely turn out much better than you think.
