The 5th Annual BYC Easter Hatch-a-long!

My barn is a zoo... I got like some odd chickens (lost count this spring), 4 goats (to pigmys, 1 bottle baby nubian and a bore goat), 2 rabbits and something else.... oh yeah 1 cat and 4 kittens, and a dog....

MY GOODNESS! im so darn mad! I came down to the coop this morning to find the lid lifted up. thankfully all 9 chickens were still in the coop.....but STILL. that meant there was SOMEONE WE DONT KNOW ON OUR PROPERTY MESSING WITH MY BIRDS! my mom claimed they were just looking at them, but that's what a coop is for right? keep the chickens in and the people out! they should've been messing with MY birds in the first place....I don't care who they are! (not to be mean!) along with this, the open flap of the coop lured in the hawk. he was sitting on a nearby branch. I had let my 3 older birds along with 7 of the young'uns to free range and forage a bit since they cant in their coop. (we don't free range because of the birds we lost to the hawk) ANYWAYS my mom was helping me clean out the big coop when she suddenly heard Cadbury, my head rooster, make the weirdest noise ever....then she saw a large bird swoop down into a low tree. she suddenly cried "HAWK! HAWK" and my lead went cold. I instantly jumped out of the coop, grabbing my older birds and the young roos and hens my sister @chickED told me to grab the hens before the roos....I grabbed as many birds as I could, and picked one up by her tail....she was screaming and I knew that could make the hawk just swoop down and grab her from my arms. I threw all the birds into one coop. THANKFULLY no birds were harmed and all are safe. that was how my morning went. took roughly 2 hours to clean both coops. this just ruffled my feathers! anyone else have the coop problem happen before?!?!?

WOW how horrifying!!! I just hate that heart pounding scary adrenaline feeling when things like this happen! Some people... The nerve!

I had tons! But now they are all in a huge barn... But I never had a bad problem with hawks and I free ranged my bird for for first year, and then all of a sudden a cat killed 3 of them, and then coyotes killed the rest. We found one in the morning still alive.... Then now WE HAVE HAWK PROBLEMS! UGH!? They will swoop down and take them if theyre in ur hands to.

WOW I couldn't imagine holding my bury and the hawk would swoop down and take him!

the hawks here are HUGE! approx. 4 woot wing span.
the big one that lives near the pond took my 12 lb. 6 month old RIR cockerel back in November, and that was the last we ever free ranged. boy was he a beauty. I couldn't imagine the struggle he had.....




During the summer we keep the door of the screen porch open for our ease of access....my German shepherded chased in a young redtail, but boy was that bird strong! holding it scared me enough!

I KNOW! it all happened so fast....I wish I had a video of me scrambling around to collect the chooks! I probably looked all too stupid!

all I have to say is that im thankful I held all of my birds as babies and handled them well, because if I hadn't, I probably would've never caught them in time.

well....my house is pretty much a zoo as well, but id like to keep it a private zoo....if you know what I mean.

But, just stealing? What would they do? Take it home to breed with theirs? Start a new flock of their own? Kill it and eat it? I just can't really wrap my mind around stealing someone else's birds.... or any animal for that matter.... Guess I'm just not the type to do that... so very sad that you had to go out and find that. Makes you mad when you think you have to start locking up your coop!

I can't imagine going onto someone else's property and STEALING a chicken!!!! If you are that hungry, knock on my door, I'll feed you! Don't steal from me or you'll just as likely get a shotgun blast in the tush! My rooster does NOT like people, if they even tried, they'd probably get taken out! Wouldn't that be fitting?

But, just stealing? What would they do? Take it home to breed with theirs? Start a new flock of their own? Kill it and eat it? I just can't really wrap my mind around stealing someone else's birds.... or any animal for that matter.... Guess I'm just not the type to do that... so very sad that you had to go out and find that. Makes you mad when you think you have to start locking up your coop!

This is making more and more sick by the minute... Im worried about my two that are missing!

well we have had our's stolen before and the thrid time we camped out at my grandma's place with both my dog's. we caught the little basterds red handed my dog sally a pit\lab mix had him by the ankle and pete had him by the pant leg when he was trying to jump the fence with one of our hens and he had the nerve to get pissy with us After the whole thing!!

We couldn't even use the chicken after that because he had broken her neck and the body got torn up in the strugle with the dogs so we ended up give the bird to the dogs they worked hard that night but he's lucky my grandma was going blind and couldn't get the gun loaded quickly or she would have shot him in the face.
