I can't see the air cells in my (shipped) turkey eggs when candling, so I don't know if they are detached. I got them on Saturday and put them in the incubator last night (Sunday). How long should I wait to turn them?

Oh sure, NOW the EE start laying in their nest again, after I want to collect the eggs for the HAL. Touche girls, well played! On a plus I found *four* Pilgrim eggs today! WhooHOOOOO! I spend more time on egg hunts around here, it's so much fun!

You must remember that you have eggs at home in the incubator.
Yeah, it will still be three weeks until they hatch.
Yeah, you have to wait and they may not all hatch.
Sometimes there are losses and the chicks just don't hatch...

But if they all hatch they will be so cute and adorable and fluffy.

But, the chicks at the store are here now...

On a more serious note. What breed of chick came in?

Lol. I'd love to bring them all home, but we have 175 in the store! She got 50 Black Stars, 50 Red Stars, 50 Barred Rock, and 25 Ameracauna. I told her she needed to stop, because it was too tempting, lol. She's gettin bantam silkies in next month. I got an e-mail from one of the 4-H judges that he had some bantam Cochins from a show breeder too. Don't these people realize I have an addiction and can't be tempted like this???? Lol

Here's what my incubator looked like on Saturday when I set the eggs. With the bantams in the top row, I can get away with 42 eggs in the hova-bator. So Mille Fleur booted bantams, F1 olive eggers, F2 olive eggers and heritage buff orpingtons. All from my own eggs except the orpingtons. I bought those for meat chickens this year as I didn't care for the cornish cross last year. Too much meat, too little flavor. Plus any cockerels from the rest of the hatch will also go to the freezer. It's sort of a test hatch though, as I mentioned previously. My BCM rooster wasn't fertilizing eggs but I'm happy to report that I dropped two of the extra olive eggs on saturday, breaking them, and they both looked fertilized so I may be in for a surprise. I'm thinking the winter was just too cold to get it going, iykwim. Can't wait to candle!

Today is an awesome day!! My broody hen has finally settled and joined the HAL and my kiddos have put together a homemade incubator and warmed it up to join also. Do you know what that means?

Incubator Wars!!

Contestant #1 is Mom with a store bought Little Giant still air incubator with an automatic turner, 26 eggs.

Contestant #2 is a group of 3 young men ages 11, 9, and 5 with their homemade incubator that the eggs will have to be hand turned, 3 eggs, one for each of them.

Contestant #3 is Speckles, a young hen in the midst of her first laying season, she will be doing double duty as turner and incubator, 8 eggs.

The eggs are all in and warming up, folks. This is going to be an exciting match up to see if these 37 developing eggs will all hatch, and which of our three incubators will have the most success. Keep your eyes peeled and get your votes in. We are just beginning this HAL and anything can happen!
