Question for Marans hatchers: I can sort of see through on the candling but can't tell the difference between them and my regular non fertile eggs. How soon/long before you can see and know what you're looking at on Marans eggs?

Sometimes I can see veining if I look very close by the air cell. Try shining your light at the air cell from the side. But for mine, about 10 days I can see a definite darkening inside the shell. Then it's just watching to make sure that's getting bigger. If this is your first time hatching Marans, understand that you must be patient with them the whole way. Unless they smell, don't toss them. They will likely take longer to pip and zip than your other eggs.

just give them time some take longer do to temp going up and down a little

Quote: I thought I would check again on day 10. for the Marans, and the one lone silkie egg I think one of my BO is broody I thought I might slip it under her?

Good news is out of setting 20 silkie/NN/cochin bantam?? I have 15 with development!

Thanks for all the great advice! Yep a first time hatcher here all the way around. Pretty fun and I've been good and patient. I really want some Marans and have no trouble waiting. I am a very patient person. Usually.

Hi Everyone! I hadn't planned to join the hatch, but I did set eggs on March 13 and 14. It'll still be fun to follow along.

The first issue to address is biosecurity. I would totally brood the shipped chicks seperately for at least a month.
Then I would introduce 2 or 3 hatched chicks into the shipped chicks brooder. Watch them for about 9 days. If they are all healthy together...you should be ok to integrate them together

I agree, want to make sure those that are being sent are healthy.
