I'm so sorry. I had this to happen once with my grandson when he visited. But I was blessed to check the incubator temp change and made corrections. Are you going to hatch again this Spring?

Yep. I'm reloading the 'bator tomorrow.

How well did they take the flavor after five days?

decently, I mean, it tastes like an egg... that is pickled lol. I already have a request in from my husband to make more. he promptly ate FIVE when he got home from work. that being said I am down to 6 good layers, so that means... if he eats 5 per sitting and I only get 6 eggs per day and they take at least 5 days to pickle.... clearly I am going to need more chickens right? haha chicken math wins again. I also am really excited to try this with quail eggs, they would be the perfect bite size snack!

I now have 4 going and my 5th (broody) hatched some on Tuesday. Haha!

I have 2 broodys..the one that just hatched 4 MFC, slipped 2 Silkies in after the hatch that she had incubated and I hatched in the bator so she would finish. 2nd broody has a NN egg and 4 Frizzled bantam Cochin eggs. Brinsea has 31 in it (all kinds from my flock of GCM, BCM, Blue Copper Marans, Olive Eggers and crosses), coolerbator 4 Emu eggs and a styro has 14 Porcelain d'uccles, 6 Millie Fleur d'uccles, 6 frizzled bantam cochin eggs and 2 silkie eggs (possibly mixed)!

We don't do totals here! Bahaha!

So many people ask..how many chickens do you have?? I just shake my head and say .."I really have no idea"

I could tell you how many of a particular breed or chicks right now but that's about it.

Is that bad?!?!

Wait, audience..of course Not! ;)

Well, yes! Your hands are tied. You have to get more, for your husbands' sake ;).

Wow, rough day :hugs  it's tough to lose any of them, but a favorite is even worse!  Are any of the eggs in the bator your own chickens eggs?  Could they be skittles's eggs?  Hopefully you'll get a good hatch from here.  Maybe some fluffy chicks will help bring cheer.

Thanks. We used to joke that Skittles was pretty useless. Her eggs were beautiful but no one wanted to eat them because they always had huge blood spots in them. We do have some of her chicks - pure BCMs- but then we decided to stop breeding her since her daughter started laying and it appears Skittles passed down the tendency to have blood spots in the eggs. She did make an excellent broody mama until she took her two babies out to forage and one didn't come back with her. She wasn't even really nice. But for some reason everyone loved her. I definitely think fluffy butts will help.

Aww I'm so sorry :hugs

Thank you.

:hugs  I'm sorry for your loss. Are you sure it was your dog that killed your hen? Given that he hadn't tried it before, I would believe another dog or animal came into the yard and killed your hen and your dog was just trying to protect it. Just a thought.

Thank you. I said he hadn't jumped a fence before, but he has certainly attacked the chckens before. Skittles survived being attacked by him last year, but she had gone into his fenced part of the yard. He's killed several others that got in there. But this morning he somehow got out and disappeared in a matter of minutes. We looked all over and couldn't find him. Which is surprising given his age and heart condition. We had to leave for the day. None of the other chickens leave their fenced yard, but Skittles never has stayed put, though she never went
back in his fenced yard after the first attack. She was a roamer and today it caught up to her. And it was definitely our dog that killed her.

That's really too bad. It makes it worse that it was your own dog, I've had dogs that went after chickens in the past, I never really look at them in the same easy going way afterwards. And it's really hard for me to not be mad at them for a few days. I always end up really attached to "worthless"

chickens. That's why I've kept 2 cochin roosters I don't need! Both of my favorite hens lay the least amount of eggs and are rather unfortunate looking.
