My workhorse incubator is nearly calibrated for temperature.... and the doorbell rang. UPS had arrived with a brand new Brinsea Octagon 20 Advance. My husband and daughter went all out on a gift for me this year!

Best birthday present ever!

Does anyone know why my RIR hens have green neck feathers? The oldest hens are 4, the youngest is about 3, and I don't know about the other one. One of the 4 year old's neck feathers are pointed almost as sharply as a roos.

One never know what a chicken has been crossed with.

Hatchery RIRs?

Cynthia12:
Here is a couple of shots of the same egg. It came from my only Green Egger Naked Neck pullet currently laying.

.

The one I. The blue blanket looks kind if brownish but the one I. The dresser looks more the right color.

This is her around 16/17 weeks old.

And here is a picture of my GENN rooster that I'll be using this fall to hatch from. Will be putting him with a couple NN and a couple of EE.
Hatching those eggs will be like opening Christmas Packages! I love the NN's best with bow ties like yours. My girl has a nice one too. I will have to get a nice photo of her. The gal I got her from said she may possibly lay a green egg, but it is honestly, one of the prettiest creams I've gotten in yrs. Had a few cream colored eggs, but hers are a perfectly smooth and beautiful color of cream. Love it. Not disappointed that it wasn't green. :)

Hatcheries mix other breeds into their stock to increase laying. They make more money from hens that lay a lot of eggs so they are not pure from hatcheries, even when they say that they are RIRs.

My three year old hens molted out and looked like pullets this year.

I'm not 100% sure on where one of them came from. She was given to me to keep her and 3 other birds from becoming lunch for a coyote.
