Well just went out to give fresh water to the birds since we had a small break in the weather. While out tending the flock it began snowing, before I was through it was coming pretty heavy.

Found my Salmon Nsked Neck rooster dues during the night. So he's gone now to the big chicken flick in chicken heaven.

Just opened tge door to that run and let his ladies run with the big Black Jersey Giant rooster for now. They weren't the best layers and I'll know their eggs (brown) so I won't hold those for hatching.

I have either three or four due to hatch Friday from him and three or four more next week.

I also have a son in the brooder from the NYD hatch, he's a tricolor, red, buff, and barred. Him I'll be watching. Trying not to do too much barring it seems to take over easily.

Thanks.

My philosophy is its sad, but just move on to the next phase. I'll miss him with his ability to throw pretty colored chicks, but I guess I'll have to give some of that ability to the mothers also.

The BJG will give me some larger NN's to use until I can get something raised up to proceed with.

When the weather clears I'll go see what my cousin has in roosters and borrow another one for awhile.

Yes, I'm usually the same way when I lose one member of the flock. I just lost a young cockerel yesterday, but I've just picked up and moved on. He was one of the ones on my cull list as he just didn't fill out or seem as vigorous as the others. I think the -14* night was too much for him.
Also one of the ducks froze her feet yesterday too, the 2nd one this year. Perhaps it's because they insist on getting inside the water dish & taking a bath; then, they go under the coop where it's snowy & the ground is frozen solid. I may just to have block off their access under the coop until it warms up, as I don't want to loose any more to frozen feet.
