The 6th Annual BYC Easter Hatch-a-long!

My biggest challenge this time is that it is my first staggered hatch. These first 24 are hatching today. They are on the bottom level in two separate containers as one set goes back to my neighbor after hatch. I like this part because the walls of the containers should be high enough to keep them away from trouble like the light bulb.
I have two other sets on the upper level though. OE that should hatch next week and Isbars that still have 12 days left.
Thing is, they are blocking my view!

Timing wise, this should all work out. But for this first hatch, hadn't considered how inconvenient it would be to have the others above and not be able to see all the potential babies as they pip and emerge....

Did you have a problem with chick soccer knocking pipped eggs out of position? My last chicks tended to rush a freshly emerging chick and trample it in encouragement.
Shipped eggs should always be hatched up in cartons. locally sourced eggs do not need one way or the other--hatch rates will be the same according to poultry studies.

It is a preference but it is much easier to clean up if they are hatched slightly tilted big end up in cut down cartons.

Good to know for next weeks shipped OE. Some had loose or saddle shaped air cells and I was worried about having them on their sides.

Thanks, that's awesome!

I'm doing a test hatch right now and it's day 10. I've weighed the eggs and they have lost between 6% and 11% of their weight. That's a big range and I'm not sure what to do about the humidity. It's been steady around 25%.

Does the weight drop that much normally for you?

25% is on the edge of safe humidity.
