I'm already setting myself up for disappointment, I candled a few already and the ones I was most looking forward to aren't showing anything and I set them on Friday. Guess I'll have to try that breed again. On a lighter note, my mom is buying me another incubator for helping her get her dog spayed!

The kids got mad at one of our free range peacocks because he flew into a chicken pen and was chasing a rooster...

and the next time I looked outside, he had a dunce hat on! He still had it on this morning and I had to trap him to catch him to take it off!

Very pretty and your kids have a great sense of humor!

I'm out, broody quit on me and I have no incubator. Maybe next time. I'll be watching everyone else's progress.

i dont think so. The L CHEAPO bulb thermometer that sets on top of the eggs read 105 too. Still waiting for FI to call back. I read on the Brinsea we site that even Temps a few degrees higher for 15-30 miss can kill embryo. It said going lower will not kill them. Actually they are making bators that will cool down for an hour a day to mimic nature.
I might just have to give up on this hobby it's getting so stressful let alone expensive

Chickwispers, thats what they say, these are Polish eggs and white. I can see the yolk but no veins or anything like in the leg horns. I'm going to give them more time but I dont expect anything. Just disappointed about it.

Has anyone ever had an egg be a really late starter? Like not showing anything till days after other eggs? I've never seen it happen but like most things I'm sure it's not impossible.

It depends on what late means.

Day 5 is way to early to see much. By day 10 with polish eggs you can safely toss them. Sometimes on day 5 you can see a bit of murky to the yolk that will become veins and an embryo. Other times you can see strong veins starting.

What I do is start to sort them into good and then questionable. I often have a couple of questionable eggs move into the good section of the incubator. Sometimes what looks like a blood ring develops into a chick too. I learned the hard way because I open all the eggs I remove. I was very sad to crack open an egg and see a live but soon to be dead embryo...I am so much more careful now.

Don't give up on them. I have Mottled Houdan in there right now and almost threw them out at day seven because i didn't see any life. They were shipped eggs and took a long time getting here. Then today (day 10) I looked again and WOW they all have big healthy embryos growing!

I have 7 female ducks but only 3 are mallards. The other 4 are black sweedish. Are the mallard eggs a different size than the black Swedish? I don't think my mallards are laying yet but I got 4 duck eggs today and it got me thinking about breeding the ducks some more. As long as I can tell the mallard eggs apart from the black Swedish eggs it won't be a bid deal but if they are the same size and color I'll need to pull 4 ducks tomorrow from the mallard pen.

I have a very bright light and candle enough that I can usually tell just from the movement of the yolk on day 2 or 3 which are going to develop and which won't, even if I can't see veining yet. But I always leave them in until at least day 10, just to be sure.
