This is candling..and they use a pizza box! You can just hold the flashlight in your hand, or buy a candler.

This one is interesting too...how many of you have some blocks like these for your kids..steal them back..quick! lol

But, but, 5 yrs. old..they just don't know better.  They should have been told in the beginning?

I knew better to touch things that weren't mine in someone else's house when I was tree. Maybe they didn't know better, but this sounds like a good learning opportunity.

Candling is shining a bright light through the shell of your incubating eggs to see the chicks while they are developing.  It's highly addictive.

It is also the less-popular method of accidentally blinding yourself with a very bright light. This way is not recommended.

I can on some..that are the ones that you can feather.  I did learn how to vent sex..it works great, but you have to be sooo careful..can do damage, that I am not sure I will try that again after reading what I read about it.

What information do you recommend for vent sexing? I usually can tell at two weeks by wing feathers, but I'm very interested in learning about the vent method. I know it's critical to be gentle or you can kill a chick.

Most of my eggs are doing the half shell thing. Mine lay on their side. Embryos stay on that side, even if it's not on the lowest point (does that make sense?). I think I've seen it in previous hatches, but I have a brighter light now and I'm seeing things that I couldn't see before, so I'm not sure. These eggs are from my hens and a friends. Not the same breeds. Hers are pure and mixed, so certainly not genetic. We don't feed the same feed or live too close to each other. I dip her eggs in a weak bleach solution before putting them in the bator with my eggs (haven't had any problems doing that). So the only thing in common is my incubator and I had some of the eggs in a second one until day 9 1/2. I'm not going to worry about it. Oh, one more common thing. We had a cold snap during collection time and both our flocks almost stopped laying.
Fingers crossed!

Puddin Fluff, I am loving your phoenix pair. Very pretty!

Thanks for the compliments on my birds. My broody now has an assistant and another friend who wants to be broody. The assistant will be allowed to stay, they are sharing eggs and the box, the other friend is about to meet the broody buster.

We were gone for a couple days so today is day 8 for me. Candling tonight!!!
