mareks is a herpes type virus so the best thing to do is try to keep them as healthy as possible.

The initial infection is usually symptom free. It is not the big killer unless you have an un healthy or not mareks resistant flock. I have never had a sick chicken from thie initial infection but I have had a Hatchery hen die of Mareks cancer.

Just like in humans, the herpes virus will become a reproductive cancer later. With hens, that is usually after two years old. Mareks cancer is the big killer with mareks.

Use a pro biotic and make sure the flock is healthy. A percentage of your hens will die after two years old from mareks cancer with or without the vaccine.

Hmm I know I have been asking a lot of questions but what is everyone's thoughts on cedar bedding, I know a lot of people say NO lol, but that's all I have right now so I wondering what people say. My bedding consists of cedar shavings and puppy pads right now but my ducklings keep eating the filling of the pads and I assume it would be safer to just use cedar maybe because of that?

I don't have that breed but I have brown eggs and I found that the "bright light LED flashlight" app works amazing!

There is one type of cedar that can be bad for chickens but I do not think they sell it for pet bedding.

I use pine shavings.

Cedar shavings are not reccomended for any small animal. (Especially the green.) I've had everything from hedhogs/mice/guinea pigs/rats/hamsters/box turtle and when you research before getting into them one of the first warnings you'll see is not to use Cedar bedding. This is taken from exoticpets.about.com :Based on the studies that implicate the compounds from cedar in allergic and respiratory diseases as well as the impact on liver enzymes, it seems it may well be prudent to avoid cedar shavings as bedding or litter, especially since alternatives are available.

Pine, not cedar!
