Just a silly thing I have been doing...
I stop turning 4 days ahead, and ramp up the humidity 2 days ahead. Have not gotten as many upside down chicks this way. The Silkies and SG tend to do that a lot. Just seems to work for me but it could be a fluke...lol

Hi Lisa..I also turn my humidity up a few days ahead. Not all the way up, but to low 40's..or 45. So, must not be a fluke. I have some small eggs in one of the bators. I have had the humidity up for the last couple of days for them. I don't stop turning them that early though. Hmmmm..........

I noticed that too, that big chicks (big eggs) seem to have trouble getting turned around if they are fat end up in a turner until day 18. I've also backed it off to day 17, and raise the humidity day 19. I started my hatch at 47%, it was going great, then started fiddling with humidity but I should have left it alone. I also drop the temp 1F on day 19/20...whenever the first pip happens.

What a sweet OEGB!! Those little Seramas are so fortunate to have it. Is it a pullet?
I would guess so but who knows until they either lay and egg or crow lol. But I would say 90% she's a she not a he lol.

This happened to me this morning! I bought 6 bantys from tsc yesterday and put them with my 4 week old EE girl and shes been feeding them and trying to get under her. I let them out earlier and the bantys followed her everywhere!
That's the cutest thing I've heard all day lol

This is great..goes to show how different ways work for different folks. A lot of different variations causing the difference. Different bator? Different humidity in the house..warmer in your home? Raz just talked about that. So many things to work out for yourself..but, having said that, if you are new at hatching, go with what is considered the norm for now. You can always learn how to adjust with later hatches.

I hate when they stop wiggling! I know they are resting and there is a lot going on but holy cow does it make my stress levels go up! I have Seremas and silkies in the one bator and they are all very small eggs, ive been prepared for thwm to hatch a day or two early just in case. I put them on lock down today instead of tomorrow as I can hardly see anything in those eggs anymore. My other bator has some EE eggs that are really tiny and I'm debating on moving them to the first bator as they seem a lot more developed than the larger leghorn and Orphington eggs they are in with. But then I think, hey they're doing just fine and I can always pop thwm out real quick if they hatch before anyone else. Ugh, I'm so excited. I've always had some condensation on thw windows of my DIY bator, hatches were always great at 65% humidity. Maybe I'll drop it down some to see if they pop like popcorn too lol.

I always feel like not turning them a little earlier gives them a hair more time to get turned around before they get too snug in there lol. Last hatch I already had a pip when I added the water, and they were fine. And no goop in those marans eggs...they get that jelly like crud in there when too much water, then the Silkies need more water or I get lots of dead-in-shells....weird how different it seems like they all are. You are right about how you have to fiddle with them to get them to work in your individual environment/bator.

Had a chick like this one once, a friend ended up taking it. That chick turned into the most beautiful hen! That brown went down the head and neck into a golden color The body was black with some golden in it too..wondered if it was a mix with a golden laced wyondotte. By the way...your baby sure likes to eat! Check out that full crop..cute!

The way I have come to regulate my humidity is via different size bottle lids or small cups of different diameters. certain diameter will result in certain level of humidity in your bator. The wells did not work very well for me because when I was filling one, the humidity would be only 35% but filling both would make it 70% or more and there was no in between. If you do use small cups, make sure that they are filled with pebbles or marbles so that in case a chick decides to climb up (mine certainly did), it does not drown.
