Today was egg dying day here at my house. My daughters and also all the nieces and nephew came for the fun filled day.

Here are the eggs we started with, colorful in there natural state yes but they did some amazing things with them, yes even the Marans eggs were colored beautifully.

First station we set up were pans of shaving cream and the kids swirled food coloring throughout the cream

and the eggs were rolled around in the cream

Let shaving cream dry on eggs for about 5-10 mins then wipe or rinse clean.
got a little messy!

Next station we set up cups of dry rice and covered the rice in food color to make it nice and wet, drop the egg in cover the top and shake it up good

4 shaving cream eggs on top 4 rice eggs on the bottom
shaving cream eggs to left rice eggs to the right

Last station we set up was the nail polish station. Nail Polish!? You ask? Why yes, nail polish!
Each kid took a glass of room temp water, slowly poured nail polish into the cups of water to get lines and specks of color in the assortment they chose

next drop an egg into the water

and these are some of the nail polish egg results

And lastly our total results, 7 kids and a fun filled 2.5hours it was a good day.

Tough day as the SFH that pipped this morning did not make it, and to add to that, one of the BCM's drowned in the brooders water dish. Good news is we have another SFH as well as an OE that have pipped, so we are not done yet.

I have 2 chicks (different breeds) that are having difficulty getting up. Its been about 8 hrs since they hatched and have fluffed up and look healthy otherwise. However, are dragging themselves by walking like a penguin. Apart for giving them vitamins, what should I do with them? There seems to be no reason for splay legs. Inubator has shelf liner, first brooder has paper towels and 2nd brooder has pine shavings. Plus it does not look like classic splay legs. The legs are forward but spread a little apart and the chicks are trying to walk on their hocks (if I am trying to use the correct terminology)

I just skipped nearly 100 posts lol (I will go back and read them all) but first I had to share...

My first chick of this hatch a long finally hatched!!! A Cream Legbar pullet

3 more CL eggs have pips and nada from the other 50 some things as of yet.

Only issue I ran into is that the humidity dropped drastically in one incubator so I have my shower running to steam up the bathroom so I can quickly open the lid and add more water. I hope it works and no issues arise.
Now it all begins. Here they come!

@chicken pickin those eggs are amazing! We never did that kind of stuff back in the day. :p

Chicken Pickin it looks like they had a blast decorating eggs for Easter! How fun!

Thanks! It really was fun!

We normally just do the colored tablets that dissolve in the water and you drop your egg in and tada your done your eggs in 10 mins. I got bored with that and so did the kiddos so I looked up a few new fun things to try and it was so fun and took half the afternoon. They were so into it. Ill be doing more stuff like this again next year for sure.

If anyone is still following my saga and not just scrolling past because I'm so whiney… I came home from being out allll daaaay and I saw that I had two more pips!! And I was like

But then I looked at my numbers… humidity down to 20%

temp up to 101.3

So I was like OH NO! KIDS, GET WATER AND WET PAPER TOWELS! They had them to me in seconds, and I quick opened the bator and threw the wet paper towels over the eggs. Quickly poured more water into the reservoir and shut the bator again. Humidity was back up to 65% in 15 minutes, at which time I removed the paper towels.

Now I'm hoping and praying that those three make it, and more come along behind them. It's going to be a long night. If I get any chicks from this hatch it will be a miracle!
