Gender is determined upon fertilization depending on the genetic material provided by the parents. The embryo can't be without gender.

ETA: I stand corrected by @ronott1 that the genetic information from the rooster has any part in it. But, it's still true that genetic information determines gender and the embryo can't be without gender.
I would assume it's female till day five when the male chromosomes kick in if they are present....

I checked my last egg. I reviewed my weights and found it to be light on my final weight, and the air cell was huge when I candled it. I did an eggtopsy and confirmed mid incubation fetal demise.

So here are my final hatch totals:

Easter eggers 23/35 set; 23/31 fertile (74%) The Chicksplosion was wonderful!

Toulouse Goose: 3/4 set; 3/4 fertile. (75%) I am truly amazed these hatched considering they were submerged in freezing melt water and then accidentally cleaned and deodorized instead of gently misted during daily cooldown. One died about 10 hours after hatching, but the other two, Febreeze and Tide, are fat and healthy. They still smell fabulous.

Butterscotch Call ducks: 0/5 set, 0/4 fertile. (0%) These guys were troopers, considering how beaten up their air cells were. The last one held out for a long time before the wonky air cell disrupted his growing vasculature.

3 dozen duck eggs on deck for incubation... Incubator #1 is bleached and ready for geese! Incubator #2 gets taken down and bleached today. Next run starts tomorrow!!!

The egg is either male or female--the male has nothing to contribute because the hens are the ones with the gender section of the gene pair.

A hen is born with about 3000 ovum. They are all either male of female at that time. Nothing will change that ever. What determines gender is a statistical chance of which gender egg ripens and comes out.

Basically, you can do a genetic test of an ovum to see what the ovum is.

The chick will never start as a female and become male or vise versa. They may be gender neutral until hormones kick in; Not female until they become male.

wow, that is rather fascinating. I was wondering what one could do to influence gender. I think some egg bearing creatures can determine gender by temperature (I am sure I learned that in school, but it's been a while since I was there and cannot remember what creature it was. I am thinking turtle or gator, something like that, but I am not certain)
so the eggs are gendered on creation... I guess that is from moment of chicken development in the egg then?
awesome bit of info, thank you! have an ovation for that (whatever it is, I am guessing it is good)
