The 7th Annual BYC Easter Hatch-A-Long!

Not chicken related, but we are relatively new fish owners, small tank in the livingroom. One of our female platy live bearers has been looking pregnant for a few weeks. Well I just took a look at her and SHES HAVING BABIES!!!! So tiny and so adorable! Me and DD are watching her now and we are so excited. I know they are just fish, But I cant help but smile and be excited.

I love live bearers! Did you know platies can also breed with sword tails?

Wow! They look a bit like baby chicks at first...and then they don't...lol! But that's like guineas too...they look like chicken chicks at first, BUT they definitely don't look like chickens when they grow up...

Eggs advertised here are anywhere from $2.50 - $4.00.
I noticed because I was thinking "should I buy AND try to incubate them???" Then I was like "no, stop thinking that way!!"

Local Yokel if regular ducks are too noisy you need Muscovies. They don't quack.

The one is a Golden.

They grow up like this

Well the Males do. The females are more speckled on the breast instead of the rust coloring and dont have that dark brown chinstrap beard, Like I do!

Just gorgeous, scrubby little beard and all.

New door installed, new trays in the bator, cleaned, sterilized, new humidity pad in place, powering up to stabilize.
Hmm...should get some new weather stripping for the seal, that looks beat up....

Love the door! Er, I mean, the BOYS love the door!

So I was looking for the contest of the pictures and to my surprise it found this in my bator. I just had to share.

Poor thing, I had to rub a warm wet napkin on him to take it off.
Adorable! She wants to be in the caption contest, too.

Say hello to Pip Squeak and Goliath

Amazing what about 36 hours difference can do in size.
How cute!

Day 8 update on my pre-HAL hatch.... So far 5 out of my 6 show very good development. I did an eggtopsy on the sixth and it wasnt fertile. One of the remaining 5 has a floating darkness in it, it doesn't look like an embryo. But Im not ready to toss that one. Hopefully it's just the embryo at a weird angle. I've got my fingers crossed!!

Look for defined veins. If the veins have faded, it is most likely dead. When in doubt, keep sniffing. It will smell before it explodes, hopefully.

Congratulations! In case you don't know, you need to separate the babies if you want to save them. The adult fish will eat them. If you have lots of cover like grasses (real or fake) for them to hide in, a few may survive.

Thanks! We have half the tank covered in live floating plants, we added more this morning to thickin the layer. right now they seem to be hiding in the pebbles on the floor surface. I added another fake plant to a back corner where the mom fish is hanging out. I hope I didn't squish any fry, I didn't realize they were in the pebbles, from all I read I thought they go up to the surface and hide in the plants.

Way cool! Do you really sell your eggs for $3.50? I think I need to raise my egg prices! I see a doz. for $2.50. That's pretty close to the going rater here, I them going for 3..but I give a deal to a family.

I sell all I get for $4.00/dozen to a guy who sells them for $5.50/ dozen. The layers get non-GMO feed though, so that makes a difference around here.
