The 7th Annual BYC Easter Hatch-A-Long!

My DH surprised me yesterday when he told me to start collecting for the HAL. I was planning on a few days worth. So i get to SET ALL THE EGGS!!! We are averaging 6-8 per day now with a couple of niner days. I have no idea what i will do with the possible 70+ chicks! Well.. That's not entirely true, I will sell them cheep! They all will be from the purebred hens in my sigature crossed with a mix roo of unknown origin and a Ayam Cemai who may or may not be a cross. My first hatch was these and they are a cute colorful bunch.. I have to get busy and build a LARGE temporary brooder box..

I should have red star hatching in the next day or two for the 4th hatch for me. These are shipped eggs and are questionable at this point.

Wishing those good luck on receiving your eggs in great shape!

I found my eggs I'm going to set right next door...well, almost.  From the town next door.  Silkie eggs.  He has some SG's in there too. I am not in need of any more layers, and the ones I don't want to keep should sell easily around here.   :)

My shipped Silkie/SG only produced one of each. I hoping to get replacements as the seller said she was having fertility problems in that pen. I just think they are the cutest!

Hmmm, I always read you should have the incubator up and running prior to the eggs arriving, that way temperature and humidity is good to go when you're ready to actually start incubating. And I'd imagine the using the turner right away might depend on the state of the air cells. If damaged, I'd let them sit without turning as well but if they're not loose, does it matter much? Also, is 8 hours enough for them to rest before adding the heat of an incubator? My temps are going to be a warm 20s-30s next week when they arrive, so I'm assuming they're going to be cold when they get here. I can't imagine going from 30-40 degrees to almost 100 degrees in an 8 hour span is good for them. But then, I'm totally new to this so who am I to say otherwise?

Besides, if you want me to incubate within 8 hours of receiving them, I'll be too early for the hatch-a-long

It IS what they say I believe...to let the 'bator run for a day or so to make sure one has even temps. I start mine about an hour or so before I put eggs in mine...but mine heats up super quick and holds nice.

I brought the eggs home that I bought...it was a 4+ hour drive. But I mine rested 12 days before I got mine in....(not by choice)

I do see veins a good majority of the purchased ones. I "had" planned to get them in by 7 days.

Day 22 of my test hatch and 7 of the 8 have hatched with the 8th one pipping!!! My 1st ever hatch by myself (usually my parents did it with my boys)! Praising the Lord! So that means if this one makes it out of the 11 eggs we set, 8 hatched! God is good!

Tomorrow is set day to get mallard, turkey, guinea and peafowl eggs! It's also the last day for goose eggs.

mallard (derived) duck, goose, turkey, guinea, peafowl: 28 days to hatch; set February 27th
goose: 28 to 32 days to hatch; set February 23rd - February 27th
