The 7th Annual BYC Easter Hatch-A-Long!

Is it too late to join? My chicks are due to hatch on Easter. I have Phoenix, American Longtails, Onagadori, and Yokohoma eggs set.

Hi! Welcome! My chicks are due on Easter, too. I have 27 blue laced red Wyandottes in the incubator. Good luck to you!

Wow! I put my eggs in lock-down last night (day 18). Today I went down to check on them, and one has already pipped! Talk about early!!!!!! Looks like we'll have some fuzzballs for Easter!

Thanks to all who commented on turning fertile eggs during storage prior to incubation. The only reason I question it is that I learned we turn incubating eggs so that the developing embryo doesn't stick to the membranes against the inside of the shell. Well, an egg that isn't incubating isn't growing an embryo so I wasn't sure if this was actually an important step. Honestly, I still question the science to it even though I see many of you do it. As long as nothing is developing in the egg, and you have it sitting straight up and down, won't the chalaza hold the yolk in place? If so, is tilting the eggs really doing anything to help? But since I'd only have to do it twice a day, and only for a handful of days, I might just do it anyway. I suppose it can't hurt. The room I have them in is in the low 60s but humidity in my house is no where near 75%. Not sure what to do about that!

Back on track, there's still no signs of life yet in my incubator. Come on day 20... I want to see some pipping action...

Well no hatch for me all the eggs quit. It's probably because I don't know what I'm doing. Still kind of disappointing though. You guys better put up lots of pictures of your chickies hatching.

Sp put of curiosity I decided to break out my egg scale and weigh my eggs from my girls just now. They just started laying 4 days ago, which I posted here when they did, and at first it was just 2 of them for 2 days then yesterday a third girl started laying so yesterday and today we got 3 eggs each day. The newest girls egg is actually a little bigger than the others but barely. ANYWAY, they didn't move the scale!!! LOL well, 2 of the ones from today did but baaaareeeellyyyyy. Stuck on Peewee. Meanwhile all the large eggs from Stop & Shop look freaking HUGE and one weighed in at XL!!! Scale went flying lol bigger than some jumbos I've seen. Also the other day I dropped one which bounced off the side of the nest box roof and landed in the run but it didn't break!! It barely cracked but the egg shells are hard so that's good! It's still in there cause I don't even think it broke the membrane and I want to fill the carton for a picture but I'm going to give it to the dog after. Technically tomorrow we would have a baker's dozen since yesterday a third girl started laying but my dad ate her egg lol but ah well, still a colorful egg basket! Hers is a bit darker brown and the other is pretty light brown then the nice green one so a nice perfectly colorful egg carton just in time for Easter!!! Hopefully the other girls will lay soon! And btw, my dad said it was the most delicious and richest egg he'd ever had. The egg shells were really hard and the yolk was bright/deep orange color and so fresh it stayed upright. Tiny but delicious. So that's good to know!
