The 7th Annual BYC Easter Hatch-A-Long!

I think two of my hens are going broody, they are making those funny noises, I will get some fake eggs and put for them in a nest box, if they sit on them then I'll give them eggs or is there a better way to tell if they will sit on eggs?

Count me in pls last year I have entered but my name wasent put on the list! I will set 24 eggs and will be all mixed breed, Orpington,European bold necked, and some polish bantam. Thank you

Welcome, so glad you could join.

When I get the urge to help, I slap my hand and go away from the incubator for a while. For example, I really want to get that chick out, slap my hand and go to work. 9 hours later, the chick is running around the incubator....Sometimes they do not make it and sometimes I follow the "rules" and assist. About half of the assited chics do not make in anyway tough.

Yeah, its almost more an art then a science when it comes to knowing when to wait, when to help, and when to just leave it be. Trust me, it took us a while to figure it out and there was a lot of heart-ache along the way.

48 eggs in lockdown so hoping for a good hatch will post photos when I am able to open it and take them out

Best of luck!

I loved it but DH would complain that they were pooping on the roof.

Yeah, my family doesn't like it when they go on the drive way or the porch for the same reason. I honestly don't really mind.

I'm patiently (ok...impatiently) waiting to see IF I'm gonna get anything hatching. So far...no pips. I forgot to raise the humidity until Friday evening.

Well, I was supposed to be away Thursday...and I thought I'd do it Thursday night (and I forgot)....then I was supposed to be away Friday and, well, you get the picture.
I hiked up the humidity WAY up yesterday and again this morning to compensate. So I'll see if I saved the day...or will fail miserably.

And I really wanted to see if chicks were going to hatch from the rolling cell eggs.

I'm ruining my own trajectory.

Im trying may make. Where i live no roosters. No noise. . I live i the city:)
Hi i cant i cant have roosters in the city! My chickens have ate all my grass in my back yard. I have a dirt back yard.

Welcome, so glad you could join us.

Chickens can be kind of messy and noisy, its true. You could try locking the chickens in a run and planting some grass seed. In the spring the grass often grows longer then the chickens can keep up with.

I candled all 24 of my eggs last night after noticing an early quitter that I couldn't find again.
I have 21 wigglers (some are doing the Macarena!) two clears and the early quitter that looks like it was dead at about three days. Nothing really to even see.
This is my best hatch (so far!

) that I have had in six or so hatches!
The problem is that I only expected a few to hatch. Now what am I supposed to do with almost fifty new chicks within a month? I mean, there will be 21 from this hatch, plus the hatch along. Then I have five girls that will probably go broody at any time (their sisters have already hatched out a clutch each over the winter!).

I need to get this math under control.

Whoa!

If your hens go broody before a hatch give them fake eggs for a week and then slip some of the new incubator babies under them. This will help with the chicks care and prevent the hens feeling the need to hatch out even MORE chicks (though more chicks isn't necessarily a bad thing

).

Best of luck!

I have almost 350 eggs in bator and a bunch outside looking forward to when chick fever hits and I can start selling some b4 they take over everwhere I have not gotten ahead of the math at all

Keep us updated!

When hens are broody they'll let you know. They'll get on a nest of eggs and they'll sit there all hunched up and protective looking, very different then when laying (they sit more upright generally when laying). They may even peck at you and when they get off the nest they spread out all their feathers and run all over the place on their toes, telling any roosters to get out of their way. They'll only use the bathroom once a day, then go running back to their nest. If someone else is on their nest they'll wait near-by until they get it back.

Broody hens are awesome!

I have one right now also.

[COLOR=800080]Unfortunately, the sandman is never on strike at my house anymore.
