I'm throwing my feathered cap into the ring..We've just hatched our first chickie and I think we're ready to get serious with this thing! Nothing fancy here: just barnyard crosses (Australorp roo + RIR, SLW, & an Ameraucana)![]()
First chick of many, I hope!![]()
Side note: We really don't know which eggs belong to which hen (except the Ameraucana of course). Any idea if this chick is a wyandotte or a RIR cross?
You helped it out? I would put my finger up against the naval area and pull that off from the egg..don't pull from the naval area. Then, having a paper towel on hand, once you have it separated..put the paper towel against that naval..if fact, squeeze the naval area together. You will have to hold it there like that for a while, I am seeing a lot of blood. The baby could make it. May be weak for a while. but I have had them make it after holding it together like this for a while.
Wipe down a pair of scissors with alcohol and snip the cord. Watch to make sure the chick isn't getting pecked. There might be some blood so have some paper towels ready.
Yeah, that looks like a pretty thick cord. When it stops bleeding, clean it up like Myfourladies has suggested..and I put Neo on mine after they hatch anyway.Wipe down a pair of scissors with alcohol and snip the cord. Watch to make sure the chick isn't getting pecked.
I tested it on my hens after separating the roos and those are the eggs in my test hatch. Some of the hens lasted 14-15 days but the latest was 22 days. I have a friend who had fertile eggs almost 3 months after she re-homed her rooster.I found this out! With Bubba gone, I'm still seeing fertile eggs from two different hens! It's been three weeks at least since I placed him. I have some in lock down right now..four, then one last one..that developed that I put in about a week and a half ago. It will have Bantam Barred Rock buddies.

No, I don't help it out. But thanks!
Thank you! I think that I will let it sit for a while and watch it so make sure that nothing else comes out anymore. Thanks!
