Good morning!! So exciting
if its racoons they will reach though the chain link and eat there heads off. I have chain link pens also. I have tops on my kennels (woven baling twine) The fox were going over the 6 foot kennels. even after the I put the tops on kennels I kept finding headless chicken in the coops in the morning. The fox were getting on top the kennels and trying to pull the chickens though the netting off the roosts. had too use a board to peak the netting way above the roosts. So far the chickens have been safe. Those fox are smart little devils....
I've read somewhere that someone used "hot hands" to keep the temps up on eggs when they lost power. If you can get out before the storm you can pick some up at the store. They make them for hands and for feet.Okay, so we are suppose to get this big snow storm...... My test chicks are due to hatch tomorrow....... What happens if we lose power tonight??? This is my first time incubating. Thanks in advance! Blessings!

Oh, yes that is a good idea! Thank you!I've read somewhere that someone used "hot hands" to keep the temps up on eggs when they lost power. If you can get out before the storm you can pick some up at the store. They make them for hands and for feet.
Good idea! Thank you!!!Get a converter for your cigarette lighter in your car. You'll have to have your car running so your battery doesn't die, but it's a cheap, short term solution
Quote: Yep, I got that. I've had a hen hatch chicks 8 feet off the ground. The hen doesn't take the chicks off the nest until a couple of days after the chicks hatch. (possibly longer if there are unhatched eggs)
Some obviously have luck moving broodies, but I have not. They always freak out and go back to the nest they chose. (or pace if they can't get out) This way was an easier solution for me. Plus, when you have 10 broodies, you can't always find a private spot for them to sit.
This hen was in a shavings bag on a shelf. You can see the roof above her head.

Check out the links on the first post of this thread.Anyone know someone I could order bantam hatching eggs from?
Unless you know for sure that it's dead, I would vote on not touchingIts been 2 full days already. Day 23 end in less than an hour.
ha ha, what a twerp!
I'm training a German Shepard now. She gets along great with the chickens. And is starting to treat them like there her kids. She's only a little over 4 months but is smart as a whip. Haven't had any predator problems yet knock on wood. But my coops are very secure. But my chickens free range every day. But my Shepard likes to free range with them most of the day. She comes in and will sleep an hour or two then beg to go back out.We had a fox problem for a bit. We'd go out in the morning and 1 or 2 of the girls would be torn to pieces. The third night the dogs started in and I let them out. Cornered a big fox out by the coop and snapped its neck. Brought it back to me like a gift. My dogs do a pretty good job Of protecting the chickens. They've killed raccoons opossum and now a fox when they get to close to the runs.
