The 7th Annual BYC Easter Hatch-A-Long!

going to have to withdraw sorry, will be out of town for setting day unexpectedly
Like many others before me said, set as soon as you return and stick around for the fun!

I went to TSC today for cat food, sunflower seeds and meal worms. I had a 10% off everything TSC coupon that I get in the mail on occasion. No poultry babies there....

.....the tanks and heat lamps were set-up. The woman inline in front of me asked when they would be in. The clerk said, "we were told to turn the lamps on when we leave tonight and the first shipment will be arriving tomorrow. Call first to make sure they're here before coming in". Won't be back in that direction until next Saturday.....good thing!

Hi,

I set eggs today 103.. of which 18 are turkey eggs SO I am in with 18... I am hoping for none to hatch but a Tom was seen with my hens so I thought "what the hay" and incubated them. I will be putting my toms in next week..

Shipped eggs have a MUCH lower hatch rate, even with experienced hatchers!

SHIPPED EGGS & Malpositions!
BELOW ARE "SADDLE" SHAPED AIR CELLS
SADDLE SHAPED AIR CELLS are very COMMON with shipped eggs!

Saddle shaped is when

one or both sides have a large "dip" in the air cell.

A lot of times with saddle shaped cells the chick doesn’t position correct for hatching and their feet can easily get stuck behind their head and “smoosh” the chick so they can’t move, it can also force the yolk sack and everything more north in the shell.... Keep a close eye on these eggs and its VERY important to pencil mark Air cells! Issues Step by Step Guide to ASSISTED Hatching

UNDERSTANDING what goes WRONG with SHIPPED EGGS
The yolk of an egg is held in place on each end by what is called Chalaza. These are delicate cords that keep the yolk centered in the egg. When you crack open an egg, you notice a white stringy thing on the yolk, this is the Chalaza. When eggs are shipped they encounter postal handlers that toss the packages, sorting machinery, bumpy vehicle rides, temperature changes and possibly X-ray Machines! So by the time the eggs get to you they are pretty much scrambled inside. So if you are going to buy eggs and have them shipped to you, be aware that the viability drops TREMENDOUSLY. There are rare instances when they ALL arrive safely but it is always a gamble.

Shipped Eggs How & When to Set!
"Settle" & Setting of eggs
Shipped eggs need to be left to warm to room temperature
& need to settle B4 adding to the incubator!
This "settle" time will vary depending on the age of the eggs, DO NOT TURN THEM!!
if the air cells are large they are already getting old! Most shipped eggs are getting old!
Settle 6 hours and then set (begin incubation) if they are getting old and have large air cells. But continue to read below for Rolling, Ruptured, Jiggly Air cell info!
If Eggs are FRESH you can settle for 12-24 hours.
REMINDER~ Never Set COLD eggs in the incubator.
EGGS WILL NEED DIFFERENT TREATMENTS Should YOU have BAD AIR CELLS......
If an egg has a NORMAL INTACT AIR CELL:
Normal air cell eggs, settle 12-24 hrs if FRESH, IF OLD 6 hours and
then begin to incubate these upright and you may begin turning, you may lay horizontal or upright for hatching. Most people like to hatch upright for shipped eggs.
PLEASE PLEASE READ THE TURNING SECTION of this article FIRST!
If you can turn more than 3x a day PLEASE PLEASE turn them!! 3 is minimum amount!
For ROLLING AIR CELLS:
(cells no longer at fat end of the egg but like a bubble level on the long side, see above video)
Follow SETTLING EGGS ABOVE DO NOT TURN
Set in incubator Upright/AIR CELL UP/FAT END UP and
do not turn for 3 days once set in the bator AT LEAST!
CANDLE ONLY FROM ABOVE LEAVE THEM IN THE BATOR DURING CANDLE
If after 3 days and you have embryo growth and the air cell is still completely loose, do not turn another 24 hours.
For detached, Jiggly or disrupted air cells:
(see above for descriptions and images)
If air cells are Saddle shaped, Detached/Loose, or Jiggly follow above settle times
and set in the incubator and don't turn for at least 36/48 HOURS
After that time, turn on the turner or begin with the gentle turning side to side
or you can turn by hand in the carton by simply tilting side to side, see image below.
Below image are Eggs in A Carton with Bottoms cut out for Ventilation
Below image of Turning damaged air cell Shipped Eggs, just lean to opposite side.
TREATMENT AT LOCKDOWN.......
Shipped eggs that have had loose air cells or saddle air cells, should be hatched upright but tilted just enough so that the lowest dip is somewhat upright, so if they have fluid in the air cell it may prevent drowning).

First and foremost, @Sally Sunshine for her excellent shipped egg information,
such that I'm getting live birds hatching from this mess:

CRACKED EXPENSIVE IMPORTANT EGGS
If you do receive a cracked egg and it’s an expensive egg you can try to hatch it, but beware of bacterial explosion and good possibility of ruining other eggs. It is possible to hatch a cracked egg by sealing the crack with candle wax/crayon wax or finger nail polish. Try to place the egg in a cup or protected place well away from other eggs. If viable to hatch, keep a close eye on where the pip mark will be in case the chick cant get through a fixed area.

Sally, I ordered eggs from eBay, and I told the seller exactally how you said to ship them and they said that they would. But, my incubator is the Brinsea Mini Advanced Incubator with the automatic egg turner. With that incubator, I can only incubate them horizontally. Is that okay? Because I saw that you said to only incubate them when they are sitting up.

@Sahwithchicks Happy Birthday!
Thank you ladies! I appreciate it :) I candles my Faverolles eggs from Sandra Provost and 11 still have veining, woohooo! I dusted my coops this afternoon and gave the birds a little bit to treat for any bugs... didn't see any, but I did find a hen with a fairly substantial laceration on her side that is probably a week old. She showed no sign of distress, tough girl! The position of it makes me think it is from a rooster mounting her :eep

If they have internally pipped but are stalling, take a thumbtack or needle and make a small hole in the air pocket section of the shell. This will let more oxygen in and the chick often will gain the strength to zip on out.

Thanks for the info. I think I'll go try that.

I sure hope there are some others still alive in there. It would be so nice to know they made it all the way to hatch. Its so amazing to see them break into the world for the first time.

Poults are so much fun. I can't wait to see yours when they hatch.

Update on my hatched chicks::::

These are the three eggs I put under Susie. She hatched out two but the third I assisted a little because I needed to move them by evening. It had absorbed the blood and yolk so all I did was pull its head out and let it crawl the rest of the way out on its own time. The I moved these three and their mother to a crate (out of the nest box).

I moved Princess from the broody crate to the broody A-frame with her four bantie chicks, including Sight (this little gal) with the cute dark cap on her head.

This is Snart seconds after hatching. He hatched by himself and then I pulled him out. Look how strong his neck is! He was already crawling! This guy is incredible.

Here is Buttercream. She is one of the standard chicks that are under Susie. She also has a cap on her head. I'm worried about her leg because she seems to be dragging it slightly, but I can't tell if this is just her getting use to walking or if its an actual injury. I hope I didn't hurt her carrying three chicks and their mother at the same time (not easy).

Three of Princess's chicks: Snart, Sight and Roshashanah. The one hiding is Nat.

Susie's three chicks. Rory (Bub's son/daughter), Denali and Buttercream.

I have some more eggs in the incubator. If they don't start showing signs of hatching soon I'm going to open them and see if the chicks died. I don't want to do it too early but the longer I wait the more I think I'm just letting them suffocate in their shells.
Aww, you have a Princess too. I just got mine to quit being broody. I was going to give her some babies that I had hatching, but changed my mind..to mucky out there! And all of my other pens are taken up that I have used as a broody pen. I love that last chick, upper left one. Coloring?
