The 7th Annual BYC Easter Hatch-A-Long!

It is more good than bad to see the darkness in the egg. The chick gets too big to see the veins easily at lockdown. The best thing is to see them moving.

:fl  I hope you have a great hatch!

That makes me feel better. They looked like they were irish and dancing a jig getting ready for st pattys day!

You will have chicks hatching for sure!

I've decided to set everything I have so far tomorrow and everything I get in the next 5 days I'll set.

I have a problem, though. I can't decide how I should label each set of eggs I set. If I label them with the set date I'm libel to forget when they go into lockdown.... and now I feel really stupid because the solution is so obvious. If I label them with the set date they'll just go into lockdown by the order of the dates.

Yep. Time for me to go to bed.

Still waiting for the Polish eggs to arrive... It's like waiting on a grandchild to be born! Our 1st and only Polish hatched Saturday & we are hooked. Nobody can look at "him" without laughing. "Sir Topham Hatt"

Just got my lavender ameraucana eggs today to add to the incubator! I expected 12 but the seller gave me 18! Super excited to hatch these out.

I've had a few eggs in my incubator for about 4/5 days, adding the extra eggs I know I'll have to adjust Temps a bit here n there but overall having different hatch dates shouldn't effect anything right?

Where'd you get your lavender Ameracauna eggs?

I'm hoping to get some in the eggs for education coming from mypetchicken but we'll have to see

I have silver cots starting lockdown. They are on the bottom of the bator and the chicken eggs which don't really hit lockdown for four more days are up in the turner above them. I took flat rectangular aluminum pans and covered them with quail hardware cloth so the chicks can't drown themselves. I am going to check to see if this bring the humidity up to the point I need. The eggs are blue with the brown speckling and just like blue chicken eggs you can't see into them without a powerful light. So I am hatching blind because my light wont get here till the 8th. I wasn't even able to weigh them because I have hidden my scale and can't remember where I put it. My chicken eggs have drawn down. I was shifting them around because I have been still air hatching for over a week. I started with the fan for the first 5 days but I didn't want to over evaporate the quail eggs so I plugged the fan into the cooling socket of my thermostat. It only kicks on if the temp spikes now.

I don't know what is more addicting: incubating eggs or making incubators. I just ordered another STC-1000 thermostat because I need an incubator and a hatcher. I have a dishwasher that I am going to refit as an incubator and turn the cabinet bator into a hatcher. Or maybe vice versa. I salvaged an enameled metal grill off of a broke space heater. I am going to use it in the dishbator to protect the heating element.

I am swinging back and forth about my chicken eggs. I don't dare get my hopes up too high but I really want at least one of the rare eggs to give me enough of the right genders to breed with. Between the Neiderrhieners, the Twentse and the Orust the Orust look like the most likely candidate. Not keen on the aggression level that I hear the roos have but those speckled legs that they sport are unique. The color pattern that they have is most likely a different set of genes than the regular mottling genes because none of the other patterns have the speckled legs. Having the possibility to add speckled legs to project birds is just too cool.

So when does lockdown start and what do I do when it starts

Day 18..

I keep my humidity around high 50%, or low 60%. Not sure what kind of bator you have, if you have wells to fill..fill them all up. Don't open the lid once you have everything set. If you need to add water for humidity during the lock down time, there should be a place to get some water added.
