The 8th Annual BYC Easter Hatch-a-long!!!!

Yes, I've heard something about that also. I've heard that it could be present in the soil and that turkeys are susceptible to it but not chickens. However, chickens can catch it from turkeys, just not from the soil. I think there is suppose to be a way to test the soil for it, but I don't know what that method is.
No idea on that. I just took my chance one year, everything was fine, and have been doing it since. I free range all my foul except during summer when I am gardening, so I figure they all hang out together 9 months of the year, what's 3 more months? LOL

1 baby and 2 more pips out of 5! This one was the egg I was most attached to. I *so* wanted this chick to be blue and it is!!! Fingers crossed that she's a she cause I named her Jolene!

Better early than late!

Turkeys and chickens are commonly hatched together. Turkey tutors! Turkeys aren't, ummmmm, as easily trained to food/water, so the chickens help them learn. I had Sweetgrass turkeys *briefly*, like 5 months. They were super friendly like a dog, but not as bright. They would not go in to roost at night and most got picked off by predators. Around here, if you don't go in at night, you don't live long. I gave the last few away, but I loved having them while they were here. I wish they were more coop trainable.

Thanks! Now that you mention it, I remember reading about some people keeping their turkeys with chickens so the chickens could show the turkeys where to eat & drink, like you said. I had forgotten that.

You can find out if your area has blackhead thru your local extension office.

I keep turkeys and chickens in the same pen and brooder when they are babies.

To my knowledge my turkey haven't given my chickens any thing.

But I think I lost some turkeys because of chickens. Mainly cocci.

True! I'd be worried sick if they went past day 21
