The 8th Annual BYC Easter Hatch-a-long!!!!

:frow  Good morning!!!

I was going to follow and get my proverbial "ducks in a row"...lol.
But who am I kidding, I LOVE hatching.:love
Please sign me up and if it isn't going to happen for me, I'll let you know.
At the very least I can be on the sidelines cheering. :woot
I'd also like to donate a prize.:)    I'll pm Happy Chooks.

You can't kid a kidder :gig
Thank you for donating, that's very kind of you. Thank you :D

I'll be setting eggs for sure, hopefully my chocolate Legbar project eggs if the roo realizes he isn't a hen :he . If I don't get fertile eggs from them then I'll just buy some more chocolate orp eggs.

Good luck with your project and let's hope your roo can sort his gender identity crisis out :fl

I want to enter!! I got two incubators so definitely count me in, I'm hoping to have some duck, turkey or geese eggs along with my chicken eggs!

:frow
With two incubators you sure will be busy! Good luck with all those eggs :)

Oh and you can add me to the list!:D

Welcome :frow

Just ordered a new Genesis last night, any opinions, or input from those of you that use that type? I have 15 serams and 15 buff orpingtons on day 9 right now in my old hova bator. I will probably try out the new incubator with a full batch of Buffs for the Hatch-a-long.

A new incubator :clap

I just got my first goose egg of the year so I will probably be setting geese.

:woot Congratulations!

Geese scare me though

I bought a pair of geese two years ago and the male died cause he got caught in the fence and the female began to bo very strongly attached to me and would "protect" me from the chickens, ducks and other humans it was so funny but I bought some more geese and she has become a bit distant but she is still an awesome goose.

I need opinions, I could start storing eggs tomorrow, and have them hatch on st, patrick's day, and then have the next batch hatch on Good Saturday, the day before Easter. What do you think? Will people by ducklings right after Easter? The sooner I get ducklings the better right?

Need answers by tonight.

At least she didn't pine away and die. I had a trio of Africans and the gander was killed (when a jerk left the road to run him over in my driveway while he slept). One of his girls was so heart-broken that she refused to eat and died.

If people are only buying ducklings because it is Easter I question if they are really ready for them. I think the sales you make after Easter would be to people perhaps who are more serious about owning ducks. What breed did you say you have again? Many of the ducks (in my area) that are sold as Easter ducks are Pekins. If you have something unusual that would make it more likely to sell. You can also pre-advertise the hatch on Craigslist. Let everyone know that you have a hatch the day before Easter.

Those are very flashy birds. Make an add for Craig's list with for the St. Patricks Day hatch with good pictures of the adult ducks and ducklings and then tell them that you are having an Easter Hatch too. So if they are not quite ready for the birds yet this would get them planning in time for Easter.

Thanks! Will do, and I think I'll have the second batch hatch a maybe the second day after easter instead, because if I have them hatch the day before Easter, I might not be there.

I'm so sorry about them. Mine were not fully grown yet so I don't think she was attached yet so by the time she was grown I was the one she had attached to.

Lozuufy!

Wow...long time since I've seen you. How's the pigeons?

Hi! I wasn't really online much from last spring through the fall, busy hatching eggs and clearing trees, getting ready to build our house in VT. Pigeons are doing great, the ones who would never finish incubating their eggs finally had one clutch hatch! AND one of the babies is a really rare color

She's named Luna

Luna sitting on my arm, she wasn't handraised but her grandmother Nutty was and Luna copies EVERYTHING Nutty does. So if Nuts sits on me then Luna does too

I have a *black* rooster too...

...

Fill us in on the legbar project!
...

So far I'm calling them Cinnamon Legbars, basically same genotype as CCLs but with the chocolate gene and without the cream gene. I'm obsessed with the chocolate gene right now, I have a few choc orp bantam eggs in the incubator due to hatch tomorrow, just to have more choc chix for genetic diversity.

Do you have pics of these "Chocolate Legbars"? They sound interesting. I have cream Legbars right now. I was planning on setting up a trio of them for breeding but I decided to stick with Buckeyes and Orps this year.

Well my hen is deathly scared of cameras (and humans) so sorry these pics aren't that great. These are f2 chocolate orp x CCL crosses.

She's the orangey one between my 2 CCLs

You might be able to see her pattern better in this one, she looks gorgeous in real life I just can't get any good pics of her.

Here's the hen and roo together. The rooster looks like a chocolate cuckoo orp right now, he had chipmunk stripes as a chick tho so I believe he's patterned, maybe the barred chocolate doesn't really show gold well

. If he realizes he's a rooster then I'll cross him with my CCL hens and all the daughters should look like my Cinnamon Legbar hen.
