The 8th Annual BYC Easter Hatch-a-long!!!!

Hi guys

Bad bad day here. Just terrible and I can't stop crying.

We moved the 8 baby quail from our test hatch out to the brooder in the coop. This morning we discovered that the power tripped out in the coop(something that hasn't happened in like 8 months) probably because of the rain but we don't really know why.

All 8 baby quail were dead when we found them.

I feel just terrible and I know DH2B does too. We've never had that happen and unfortunately in spite of it being quite warm out today for the time of year and all other precautions they were gone.

I'm just devastated and I can't stop crying.

We will brood in the porch from now on at least until summer but probably always for quail and probably always a couple of weeks for chicks. This is so heartbreaking.

We have more quail hatching in two weeks and they will be brooded in the porch for sure.

Look what I received yesterday. Order of 24 eggs. He sent 6 extra. Tracking showed it was going the wrong way at first! Took 5 days to get her. As soon as I saw the box, I went..oh oh..and then when I opened it..I went .. that smell! Oh no!

Hi Cynthia, I'm very sorry to see what happened to your shipment. You have more patience than I do in trying to salvage anything from that mess.

Many moons ago I used to work for UPS as a boxline package sorter. The stories I could tell! And, the USPS had a reputation for being even worse when it came to damaged shipments. Problems would occur when container (truck) unloading outpaced package sorting. The result would be crushed packages. It was upsetting to see a crushed packages, such as one I recall decorated with "Happy Birthday" and children's drawings written in crayon on the outside of the package. One of the worst damages that I can recall was when a heavy metal canister of bull semen got crushed and broke open on the conveyor belt and package slide. That stuff got on everything and was everywhere. Yuck!

Anyway, it seems like the person who shipped you the eggs did his part in protecting the shipment. It's too bad that the USPS didn't do its part it handling the package with care. Any chicks that survive that trauma deserve names like Lucky, Iron Maiden, or Super Chick.

I'm so sorry. Sad reminder that even with all of our modern conveniences, nature is still in control.
