I haven't posted on this thread (I don't think) but I want you to know that I have followed Barbara with a keen eye and everything I read or see makes me smile/laugh. It was seeing your first story that got me started with BYC last year. We have had chickens for a year now, and are still learning. We have two ready-built boxes (I think they are called Pods...used for storage) that are 5X8 and 7 ft. high. Only need ventilation and windows and maybe a second door, (and roosts and poop boards and flooring and construction sand) to be a perfect coop...we are very slowly working on them. DH and I aren't spring chickens ourselves, and when you speak of a gimpy knee or anything else, I can understand totally. We don't get much done in a day. Talking about having your chickens have a place to look out makes me think of the two brooders I have in the house right now...one has 3 bantys, 3 guineas, and 2 that came from eggs laid by our big red chicken (hopefully a RIR) and her husband, who has been identified as a RIR. They are all aboutt 4 1/2 weeks now. The three bantys are still little - the others are going to be bigger birds, so they are already too big to be in this brooder. In the other one...I have two ducks...one big (thought it was a Pekin but not sure now) and a smaller Mallard (I'm pretty sure). The big duck is ready to be out too. They have no windows in their brooders, so stand on their tippy toes to try to see out the top. I have wire on the top so they just go bonk! They are rebelling against me by creating an odor in my small computer room, that is anything but pleasant. But I love them.
Keep it up with Barbara! If I ever go in search of another chicken, I'll look for a BR...and of course name her Barbara. These two coops we will have, will accomodate 20 fowl....and we are already over that limit, so we don't need any more right now.

The Homliest Little Chicken

Now that there is Chicken TV, the Food People have been watching the development of the Homliest Little Chicken. The Homliest Little Chicken is a bantam cochin produced by Dusty the Frizzle and her late husband, Chuckie. He has an array of frizzled feathers growing at odd angles, making him look like the Edward Scissorhands of chickens. Hopefully, the Homliest Little Chicken will grow out of his awkward stage and become round and attractive like his parents, but he has a long, long way to go. He has a little sister (he is 3 weeks old, she is 2 weeks old) in the brooder with him, and she is also growing the butt in the wind feathers, but is at the “jet plane” stage where the feathers stick out like airplane wings. It is going to be a long adolescence for the Homliest Little Chicken.
