The adventures of Barbara (BR)

A Hot Week

Barbara and her girlfriends spent most of the hot week trying to cool off under the spruce tree. Leroy did his best to keep an eye on the girls, especially when they were bathing and not paying attention to security issues. The girls perked up immediately when Mrs. Chickendad brought out some cold watermelon rinds. It was so refreshing, and they even drank all the juice and ate the seeds left in the pan.

Chickenboy visited the Chickendads and decided to set up a “Chicken Taming Headquarters” in the Food Palace. Many of the chickens were out free ranging, so he would catch a rooster and take him in to headquarters to be “tamed.” This involved carrying the rooster around petting him and feeding treats.

Hot Stuff was proving difficult to tame. He would be quiet until Chickenboy put him down and then he would challenge Chickenboy. Hot Stuff was not a happy camper ever since Leroy had assumed President of the Laying Hens. He didn’t have much to do as Vice-President, but he did it when he could. . . . The taming of Hot Stuff will no doubt continue next weekend.

Chickenboy is especially enamored of the Wyandotte roosters and has named them all. He likes to put them on his shoulder and walk around with them. The Wyandottes are very mellow and allow this, but Chickenboy has not thought ahead to the growth factor of Wyandotte cockerels. Daddy Walter is probably about 11 pounds, so his sons will no doubt be as large and may be quite a shoulder-full.

It seems that one of the Rockettes has turned out to be a Love Child. One of Frizzie’s eggs got hatched by Mrs. Rocky and she doesn’t seem to care that it is not her child. The Chickendads noticed a few days ago that the baby Rockette had pattern in her wings and fuzzy feet, certainly not a white Plymouth Rock look. But Mrs. Rocky does not make a difference in her children, she does not know which one is adopted, and loves them both the same. A lesson for life.

My 14 week old pullet BR Harriet was inspired by Barbara and my awesome new shirt. She has decided that flying up to sit on top of the coop is important. When my DH tried to tell her to get down she clucked at him and turned around. She is the only one who does this and seems quite proud of her self.

The New Girls

One night recently, Barbara was roosting comfortably in the coop with Leroy by her side. It was too hot to snuggle, so she held her wings out to the side like an eagle. Every now and then one of the other girls would flap her wings and stir the air. Barbara was just dozing off when someone came into the coop. She could not see very well, but it was the Chickendads. The coop was getting some new tenants, moving in the middle of the night like they were running from the law. Barbara couldn’t tell much what was happening, and it didn't involve food, so she shut her eyes and went back to sleep. It could wait until tomorrow, especially since none of the other girls were complaining.

In the morning, Barbara got a look at the New Girls. They had spots all over themselves! The girls were quiet and not pushy or hysterical (like the Silly Ameraucana Sisters had been), but they certainly looked strange to Barbara. A chicken with spots! Not nearly as attractive as horizontal bars, she thought. It was hard to tell where their eyes were—it looked like eyes all over them. It made Barbara dizzy to see all those spots at once!

The four New Girls were from the Speckled Sussex pen and had recently been widowed. Stanley, their husband, had injured his leg and could not perform his husbandly duties. Barbara had seen Stanley when she went out back to the Sussex pen and thought he was quite handsome, although he had a pointy butt. He was also a very large rooster and would have made her into a chicken pancake, so she still preferred Leroy, with his little round butt.

Barbara and the other Big Girls welcomed the Speckled Sisters with no fuss. It was too hot to make a big deal anyway. The New Girls settled in and began using the nesting boxes just as the other girls did. Their eggs were not as perfect and large as Barbara’s, but the girls were trying to not step on anyone’s toes, either.

Leroy didn’t pay much attention to the New Girls. He had all he could handle with just Barbara. Besides, Hot Stuff was now gone. Hot Stuff had anger management issues, so was issued a scholarship to Freezer Camp. Now Leroy had all ten of the Big Girls to himself. . . or maybe not . . .

(to be continued)
