Nakedness
Brrrrr! Barbara shivered. The bald spot on her back was drafty. She tried to arrange her feathers over it, but that didnt work so well. The Sussex girls were hogging all the nest boxes at night, so she had to roost with the Original Big Girls. She cuddled up to fluffy Buffy for warmth. She tried to go on the other side of the coop one night, but the nest boxes on that side were filled up with Giant Wyandotte Roosters. They sat there with their Big Butts hanging out, hiding their heads so nobody could see them.
The Chickendads rushed around all weekend trying to get the chickens settled into Flocks That Would Get Along. There are still too many roosters, so they put the Evil Cochin Twins in with the Silly Ameraucanas. The Silly Ameraucana girls are quite large by now, and dont take any crap from the Evil Cochin Twins. Those boys are going to have to find some Really Good Treats to soften
those girls up!
The Guinea Keets are also being tried out in this group. One of the keets is a girl, and keeps calling for Buckwheat, although she just gets regular treats. Another seems to be a boy and sounds like a rusty pump handle. The third keet tends to chatter at the same time as the other two, so it is hard to determine whose side s/he is on.
The Keets are convinced that they are next on the menu, and in spite of lots of treats and pen sitting, Mrs. Chickendad is no closer to calming their hysterics whenever she appears. Having to move the keets meant catching them, of course, further convincing them of their impending doom. The Chickendads have found badminton racquets to be very useful in helping to herd chickens and keetssort of like a long arm to steer them.
So, badminton racquet in hand, Mrs. Chickendad corralled the first two fairly easily. Number three was determined not to be dinner, so put up quite a fuss and darted by at top speed. Mrs. Chickendads reflexes are not what they used to be, so when she stuck out her arm to catch the keet, she only managed to grab its tail. The rest of the keet kept running, leaving Mrs. Chickendad with a large handful of feathers and a Bare Butt Keet screaming Help, murder!.
Maybe the Bare Butt Keet would get along with the Bare Backed Barbara!
Keets @ 2 months old, before "De-Tailing"still had their baby head stripes. They are 3 months old now.
