The Return of the Sussex
Barbara and Monica were cuddled up to Bob on the roost and were just dozing off when they were rudely interrupted. It was the Chickendads and they had the three remaining Sussex girls with them.
Those spotted girls again, thought Barbara.
It makes me dizzy to look at them. Where is their husband? Bob was too sleepy to even notice he had some new wives. He just
wuuuuuukkkkked softly and went back to sleep.
The Chickendads got the Sussex girls settled on their roost and proceeded to put cold drops on Barbaras bare back. She complained bitterly, but it was soon over and the Chickendads went on down the line putting drops on everyones skin, including their own by mistake. At least the Chickendads wont get worms or mites now.
The Sussex girls had a tragic day. They have now been widowed for the
FIFTH time. Their husband was acting dumpy yesterday and this morning he was laying on his back with his legs in the air. He had little crosses for eyes, like in the cartoons. The three girls stood around looking at him,
wuuukking softly, urging him to get up. They seemed to know something was wrong, but werent quite sure what to do about it besides being supportive. It didnt work. Chickendad removed him from the pen, leaving the girls with only memories.
The Chickendads hoped that the girls were not axe murderers or doing something else to kill off their husbands, seeing as how this was the fifth Sussex Rooster to die in a year. Now if Bob and Walter or the Wyandotte Boy for Sale wind up in that condition, the Chickendads will be highly suspicious that the Sussex Girls are not as innocent as they look. The Chickendads are beginning to think that the Sussex they have are not particularly robust and healthy, so have decided not to try to raise any more babies from them. Without an appropriate rooster, it would be difficult to do anyway. So the Sussex have joined the laying flock, and can spend their time giving Barbara eyestrain from seeing spots. It will give Barbara something to occupy her time until they can all go out to play again.
