The adventures of Barbara (BR)

Teresa, I think you've got those boys confused with your Tyson the Chick Magnet. . . . Maybe I should have kept him around to give lessons . . .

LOL....too funny. Tyson, and Hannah, are doing great. We had a scare of Cocci go through and it did kill a couple of my hens...but now I know what to look for and all are doing well - this education took some $300+ at the vet office. Tyson is quie the stud....I was giving them all their fresh water the other morning and he decided to attack the back of my leg....I am fine, he is fine (was punished). I think they are all bored because they have been locked in their run now for the winter...too much snow and it has been cold. We did have a couple of days last week that was in the upper 30s and into the 40s and I let them out to free range....they loved it. ate all the willow leaves they could. They get goodies almost daily - mashed potatoes or spaghetti noodles or oatmeal. They are always getting a treat.

Sorry about your lovely sussex boy, Mrs Chickendad!!!

Cheesecake and Fashion

The Neighbor Next Door came over yesterday with some treats for the girls. Cheesecake and garlic toast! Mrs. Chickendad gave the garlic toast to the honeymooning Wyandottes and tried to give the cheesecake to the little Mille Fleur Cochin Boys. There are eight of the little boys, and they all act very roostery. So they took a taste of the treat, and then proceeded to talk loudly to any girls in earshot that they had just found the yummiest treat and all girls should immediately come over and see. The eight little Mille Fleur Boys were buk-a-buking a hundred miles an hour; just talking about the treat and not eating it. This caught on with the boys in the honeymoon suites and the noise sounded like a classroom when the teacher is out of the room. Mrs. Chickendad decided that too much talk and not enough action (not one of her credos) was not going to work, so she put the cheesecake down for the Ameraucana girls, who have begun to lay lovely blue eggs for the Chickendads.

The Ameraucanas were excited to get a treat, and were not even particularly concerned that it was something they had never seen before. They immediately stripped the cheesecake of its crust and started on the filling. Even the boys didn’t stop to talk, they just dived right in. Soon all the Ameraucanas were slowing down and looking bleary-eyed and top heavy with their full crops.

It was a pretty big cheesecake, so Mrs. Chickendad thought perhaps the Big Chickie Girls would enjoy some, too. The Chickie Girls were most happy at the prospect of treats. They loved the cheesecake filling, and managed to get it all over themselves. Even the Sussex Girls joined in, and picked pieces of cheesecake off each other’s beaks. Barbara got right in the middle of the pack and tried to wipe her beak off, but Monica is molting so badly that Barbara got feathers stuck to her beak. She waddled over and looked to Mrs. Chickendad for help. Mrs. Chickendad wiped off her beak and Barbara went back to enjoying her treat.

“Aha!” thought Mrs. Chickendad. “I will be able to catch Barbara and try on her new outfit.” She waited until Barbara was distracted and reached under her and grabbed her legs.

“Help! Murder! Rape!” Barbara hollered. (By the looks of her, she should have hollered “Rape!” a lot earlier). Mrs. Chickendad got Barbara settled in her lap and pulled out a lovely blue chicken apron for her. She slipped the elastic over Barbara’s wings and smoothed the fabric over her bare back.

“She’s not going to like this”, thought Mrs. Chickendad. “She is too much of her own chickenperson to put up with it.”

But Mrs. Chickendad was wrong! Barbara hopped down and strutted back and forth in front of the other girls. Buffy and Roastmary both stuck their heads up and gawked at the fancy outfit Barbara wore. Cool! They tasted it, just in case it might be another snack. Barbara was way cool! The other girls were impressed.

Monica and Buffy are next in line for a fashion makeover, seeing as how they hardly have any feathers left. Mrs. Chickendad is going to drag out the sewing machine and make some more aprons so they can have a project runway show.

Too true, but Barbara is also a very smart girl who knows how to roll with the punches. My kind of gal!
