The adventures of Barbara (BR)

Thanks for your concern, everyone. The little rock boy was up on his feet tonight and preened a bit, but is not eating. He seems a little more alert, though. I'll try to see if I can get him to eat tomorrow, I didn't want to force him when he was feeling so bad. Probably give him a shot of antibiotic as well.

Robyn, that's a good suggestion about the dog. we have been dogless for a year and a half since our Sweet Annie died, but maybe its time. We reset the trap tonight with cat food, as the dead chicken was getting a bit ripe in this heat. I'm also thinking I should not leave any waterers outside at night, it may be attracting critters.

I'll post any updates. Maybe I should get Shelley1969 over here with her shotgun. She had a mink attack a couple months ago. The mink eventually lost.

Oh no! I'll be praying for you, so no more chickens get hurt

if you do, look into livestock guardian dogs- great Pyrenees, Anatolian shepherds, have heard corgies are good too- course ours are mutts, and after some work, are safe to have around the chickens

here is a recipe a friend uses for birds sick or under stress- might help the little guy
To help a bird recover from illness, they need extra protein.. this formula really helps them with thier recovery

My Treatment is this

“” This amount feeds one bird””

Feed the birds three times a day for three days a mixture of

This mixture is what you will need for the entire three feeds…. It is not 3 egg yolks and 3 teaspoons of honey etc…. divide the contents into three

½ to 1 x egg yolk….. give the whites to the other hens mixed into their seed or pellets (depends a lot on the size of the egg yolk)
1 teaspoon honey…. .given for energy
2 x tablespoons yoghurt…. Given for calcium and also to make the bowel go back into normal production after this upset
Only use the plain yoghurt never the one with fruit or extra sugar in it, not good for the bird
¼ teaspoon calcium powder (if you can’t get the yoghurt)
3 to 4 tablespoons rolled oats…. To give substance to the feed, or use chicken crumbles or layer pellets but soften them with some boiling water first
Sprinkle of multi vitamin powder (only if you are not already giving it to them in their drinking water, don’t overdose) just a few grains will usually be enough for this size mixture
2 to 4 table spoons of apple sauce or grated apple, it must be grated not chopped up for ease of digestion

Mix to make a crumble mixture not runny

Love Barb's adventures.....glad to see from previous pics she still has something green to get into. We are burnt up down here! My girls are not happy!! Even with a fan!!!
Hope you catch the murderer soon!!!

Be careful, our wonderfully well behaved Corgi that is so good at herding us and the children, shakes when he sees the chickens, he wants them sssssooooo bad, he salivates. He generally hates birds, barks at hawks (good for him), and buzzards, and yes. . . airplanes. He was a rescue and very well behaved, so it may be something to do with whomever had him before us and issues with birds, but he wwwaaannnttttssss them in the worst way, cannot be trusted.

The Deluge

The Little Rock Boy is still not feeling well. Mrs. Chickendad has him on the diet ArtsyRobyn suggested and he is getting antibiotics, but he still looks miserable. He is drinking his antibiotic water and managed to eat a little yesterday.

Barbara and Monica have been spending the day in the Pine Tree Spa with Walter and Buffy. Poor Buffy looks worse, if it is possible, than Barbara. She is missing her tail feathers on one side, her back is bare and she has lost all her fluff. All she has for a tail is a half-dozen quills sticking up on her right side. And it’s too hot for wearing the new outfit Mrs. Chickendad bought from Hillbilly Hen for her.

All the Little White Cochin Boys went out to play today. They have been staying inside in adjacent cages, but today seemed like a good time to let them out. The Little Boys had several contests. They did the 50 yard dash across the yard. Then they chased one another to see who was the fastest. They also compared backsides to see who had the biggest butt. This contest was won by Handsome Charlie, who has recovered from the wood shaving eye infection, and has the biggest white fluffy butt of anyone right now. He chased the other Little Boys trailing his white panty feathers like crepe paper streamers behind him. Another Little Boy decided to challenge a Little Brother and there was much posturing and jumping as the two boys tried to prove who was the most manly Little White Chicken. Pretty soon, the boys got tired of the competition and retired to the flower bed to dig some new bath holes. Mrs. Chickendad was not amused at the prospect of the boys learning to landscape her flower beds.

The Chicken Murderer has not returned, or at least has not been captured by the trap baited with liver. It has been very stormy lately, so perhaps the killer is laying low. Mrs. Chickendad went out the other night to lock everyone up just as the rain was starting, and by the time she had finished with the babies and the caged birds, thunder and lightning were crashing all about. The Ameraucana coop tends to leak, so she dashed out to shut the doors and close them up, but could not get the tarp over the top. The coop is right next to the 30’ metal birdhouse pole, so risking death or disability didn’t seem like a great idea. She dashed from one coop to another (well as much as Mrs. Chickendad dashes . . .) in the deluge, and gave up trying to stay dry. The last “dash” was into the shower, where she emerged drier than she went in!

So glad there have been no more homicides!! Maybe it's time for the 2011 Ugliest Chicken Contest to kick off...sounds like Buffy would be sure to win a ribbon! Poor girl. At least she's got to be cooler than the other girls!

Another wonderful story! My brother is visiting, so I read a bit to him of the Young Men posturing. He chuckled at the picture you painted. Thank you, dear MrsChickendad.
