The adventures of Barbara (BR)

I do hope you find the owners of the dog, even though it won't change what has happened. Disasters like the attack on your sweet chickens make one wonder why people could be so irresponsible as to let an animal like this run loose. Even if you tell them about the damage their dog did, they will probably have NO concept of your loss and sorrow. You and your family are in our thoughts. Just wish there was something anyone could do which would help. Take care, Debby

I'm going to miss her so much! My heart literally sunk when I read this. I'm glad you guys still have some chickens to enjoy, but it really is heartbreaking. I know what it's like to lose lots of chickens at a time. It's almost unbearable. But what's worse is when some are left behind and it seems they almost "mourn." God Bless You Mrs. Chickendad! And I say we get some memorial t-shirts and mugs made in memory of barbara! What do ya'll think? I'd be more than happy to help!

I am in the process of getting rid of my dog. Accidents happen and I can't afford mentally to loose anymore of my babies. I have my fingers crossed for you MrsChickendad. Hopefully finding the owner of the dog will give you some closure.

I am heartsick for you...BYC has lost another legendary bird. Not to minimize the loss of your other birds for it is truly heartbreaking but we shall all miss Barbara and forever look behind us when we or our critters sit on a fence. RIP sweet girl along with your feathered friends who passed on with you, at least you will not be alone in the green pasture in the sky. Bye Bye Barbara you are already missed.

I have been thinking of our Chickendad friends all day...and thinking about the lovely lives their little ones were allowed to lead, thanks to the love they had for each little feathered friend, diva, scooter rider, or just plain chicken. There are no words to make the Chickendads feel better, but Barbara's story reminds us all that life can be simple and sweet until our time is done, if we have people who love us, and friends to be near us, and strangers who share their hearts, as Barbara did, and the Chickendads do today.

Very well put!

Update

It is very quiet around the Chickendad's place these days. Leroy is looking for company, but there are no older ladies his age who are unattached. Just the five Silly Ameraucana sisters, (these are wheatens so not QUITE as silly as the original Silly Silver Ameraucana Sisters). Walter has been moved to the hospital pen and has his big butt bandaged. A picture will be forthcoming. His son Wally was injured, but is able to look after the remaining girl, Wendy. Wouldn't you know Wendy would be the last hen standing after all the grief she gave Barbara? Wendy is sporting a purple butt due to Blu-Kote, but it doesn't seem to bother her attitude any.

Frizabella has some difficulty with her right leg, but it does not appear to be broken. It does give her an excuse to be extra cranky, so she is back in the broody house where she can watch comings and goings and have room to move if she wants to. The surviving frizzle baby (named "Posey") has gone to live with Auntie Audrey the Bunny Lady and has a buddy her own age. It was instant partnership—no squabbles at all, just "Hey, I'm Robin, what's your name?"

There are several little cochin boys who have been practicing crowing at 5:30 am just outside the Chickendad's bedroom window. Several of them sound like they are strangling, a sound which the Chickendads always find entertaining. Smiles are returning.

There is a pen of 6 new BLRW babies about 6 weeks old in jail in the garage. They arrived yesterday, due to the kindness of some BYCers who had extras. It is a bit early to tell much about them, but perhaps they will be as nice as their grandmas, Wendy, Wanda and Winona. Now Chickenboy will get to dream up some other W names for them when we find out who is what.

Chicken Life slowly returns to normal, or as normal as Chicken Life ever gets. We have been grateful for all the kindnesses, support and prayers offered on behalf of us and our flock. The final status is: 30 killed, 4 injured. Still working on tracking down the dog assassin. . .

If anyone is interested, there is one remaining Barbara Tee Shirt (XL) for $10, and several mugs remaining for $8. PM me if you'd like one.
