The adventures of Barbara (BR)

Thank you for your kind words. Give Nancey and her friends an extra treat from the Chickendads.

Interesting that everyone says the Barred Rocks are hard-headed. I also have bantam white rocks and they are more like bantam cochins in temperament. They toddle over to me and look up "Buuuuuuk??" The girls are very sweet, and the boys are easy going.

Maybe the difference in temperament is due to the stripes-makes them bi-polar or something . . . similar to my theory on gray cats. Every gray cat I have had has been a sweetheart. This does not include tabbies; they tended to stomp around and be demanding. Like Barbara. . .

Mrs Chickendad....Barbara was not 'JUST a chicken'! She was an awsome bird with a great personality!!!

My BR's love heights! All of them love to perch on their 5 gallon waterer and completely drench the side in their chicken poo lol

It took me three days to read through all the pages here, and I cried when I read about the last attack. I really hope you can catch that stray dog and either dispose of it or have animal control take it.

MrsChickendad, I got my mug and think of Barbara every time I sip my morning coffee. I broke the horrible news to my mother. I have been sharing the stories with her. I had two more babies hatch from my two lost easter egger girls. I will post their pics once I am able to take some. I only hope they are all girls so that I can keep them. I have a funny story if anyone would like to hear it. It isn't a barred rock funny, but funny none the less. I have some silver laced wyandottes that I purchased and they are still in chicken jail in my garage. It has been so rainy here that I have had them in jail for longer than I had hoped. Well I set up a movable dog cage out in my yard and cover it so that they can't fly out. They enjoy eating the grass and basking in the sun. Well the other day my Mom stopped by for a visit. As she walked up she said, "I see you are free ranging some chickens". I replied, "Well sort of". She kind of looked at me like I had 2 heads and we continued into the house. Some time passed and we went back out side. As we went out the door, my 14 year old dog was laying in front of the garage steps. My mom said, "I thought you had Dasha in the cage outside?", I looked at her like she had 2 heads and said, "no....the chickens are in the cage". As we exited the garage totally confused, there were my wyandottes taking a dirt bath under a bush near my garage. Tossing mulch all over the driveway.....just like Barbara.

Apparently, when I tossed some breakfast scraps into the chickens cage that morning, my dog decided to go into the cage to see if the chickens had left any leftovers for her.....she obviously doesn't know chickens. I am just glad that she went in for the scraps and not the chickens.

Cute story! Leave it to a Barred Rock to corrupt the Wyandottes! They have done an excellent job of landscaping, ala Barbara. I'm glad your old dog is more interested in her appetite than chasing chickens!
