These photos were taken this summer, I just hadn't had the chance to share them yet. The photos with me in them were kindly taken by my husband, the "Fud Guy".
The Fud Lady learned early in the season that supervised free-ranging time was made infinitely more complex by the newly blossoming Warrior Princess, Derperella. As soon as Derp notices the other chickens are near her, she turns into a growling, spinning, angry mess. Soon the whole flock is agitated, flaring wings and hackles, and yelling! SHEESH! For the peace of all, Derperella now has "range" time totally separate from the rest of the flock, so she does not make a guest appearance in the photos this time.
Derperella, please chill your quills!
"NO"
Oh, for goodness' sakes...
Well, onto more peaceful times. The whole flock is surely a group of individuals, and each interacts with the "Fud People" in their own unique way. Lorp, who is often referred to as "THE Lorp," by way of threat (e.g. "THE LORP, IF YOU DO NOT QUIT PICKING ON WILLOW, YOU WILL BE SOUP.") is the most unsure of her relationship with the Fud People. Sometimes Lorp will see other chickens get into their laps and relax, and that seems intriguing. The problem is, The Lorp would prefer that no one touch her, ever. Even looking at her seems to require her permission. How dare you behold her beauty, O Mere Mortal? So, when it is that she jumps into a lap, she often walks around, making confused and angry clucks. Where is her attention? Why not praise and love her? OH! BUT DO NOT TOUCH, MORTAL!
"I am arrived upon your lap, Fud Guy, BEHOLD."
"Do not even contemplate touching me, even though I desire attention. Keep those hands away."
"WHAT IS THIS?! YOU MAY NOT TOUCH!"
"AAAUUUUUGGHH!!!"
Most of the flock does enjoy being touched, though. Some enjoy it a great deal! Though he is handicapped, Baron Rufflerump does not let that stop him from enjoying a sunny day in the grass. Ah, yes, please pet his nice rooster feathers.
It is lovely to be pet, as the hens forage nearby. Notice the serious Stink Eye that The Lorp is giving that hand. It better not even get close to her!
Moa, what are you doing, peeking through the tomatoes? You better not eat them, they aren't nearly ready yet! To her credit, she waited until they were ripe, a month later, to help herself.
Chickadee loves to be touched so much that the Fud Lady has taught her that she can come "up" whenever she wants. The Fud Lady simply has to offer a hand and ask Chickadee if she'd like up!
Chickadee, stepping up. She knows exactly what this hand means; it means either getting cuddles, or walking around the yard looking for bugs up high. Sometimes it means both!
Here's a short video of Chickadee getting picked up to look for Japanese Beetles. They were numerous this summer, especially in the grapes. Chickadee was so good at eating them while the Fud Lady carried her around that she worked much better than a beetle trap! And they were oh so crunchy-- Chickadee's favorite!

After looking for beetles and getting a crop full, Chickadee decided it was time for a snuggly moment in the Fud Lady's arms.
It is good to be carried around like a Queen!
Cute Chickadee, with your flop over comb, how we adore you!
