The African and Chinese goose thread!!

I am curious about it too, the "hatchery africans" I have are larger and taller than my white chinese, have different voices. But adults legs are some to mostly yellow. Either way, they are my babies, and they are staying! I cancelled my brown chinese order to be honest, partially due to this concern.. and my dads open heart surgery too, of course.
Hope your dads doing well since surgery jc

sounds like your lil geese have a lovely home! So cute ...I have a Toulouse goose that walks with me & will just chat away. When we get to the end of her area & I go thru the gate she stands there like she cannot belive I went on without her.
Her name is Moe ..& I do believe she knows it. I can be talking to the other geese...then will say her name & she will immediately give me all of her attention.
I am curious as there has been some converstation on this site about African Geese..mostly along the lines of most of the geese that are passed off as African are actually Chinese Browns or African crosses. Now to my question...did the hatchery guarantee that your "African" was indeed an African? I honestly do not know the difference..my geese are geese & although it is nice to know what they are, each is individual in temperament & action no matter what you call them.
the pics of your babies are really cute..indeed they grow rapidly...they are big birds!!

Thanks, I've always loved animals and try to make sure all my pets get to live 'the good life' lol! :) I got my geese from Ideal hatchery, they had brown Chinese, white Chinese & Africans, and said that each breed would weigh 10-12lbs, 12-14lbs & 14-16lbs respectively. They also stated that their Africans do not have dewlaps. From everything that I've read, true Africans are much larger birds and have a dewlap, which leads me to believe that the hatchery isn't selling true Africans but most likely and African/brown Chinese cross. I did my research ahead of time though, so it's not like I ordered an African and am going to be disappointed if Greta doesn't exactly live up to the breed standards - I just wanted her for a pet. :)

Quote: Thanks, he is still at an extended care facility. Hoping he will be home by august. He is so worried about our geese! Misses them so much. Dads 80, and I really thought I would lose him. Had to call 911 to get him to get help, the stinker. Dr said he would not have lived thru the night.

Quote: Yep exactly. I love my babies too, really doesn't matter "what" they are! I want my goslings to have good homes, so I try to understand breed differences and personalities of each.

They sure can be stubborn. My dad is 87 and stubborn as they come.

Hoping your Dad gets home & has more time to enjoy his life..

My geese are such a source of entertainment..but also this breed is so noisy. I always had Toulouse before & they are much quieter. My Chinese brown or Africkan whatever they are..
are loud noisy critters.

I pick weeds for them in the AM & they stand at the gate & honk like crazy while waiting for me. Then will follow me across the yard as I spread the weeds. Of course then I am expected

to stand there & hold the weeds at nibbling level for a time while they choose the tastiest buds off of the stalks! Spoiled?? nah..just particular!

Praying for you & your family!!

LOVE your babies, and thanks for your kind thoughts. I considered sneaking my youngest gosling into see "grampa" may do it yet! Dad loves them most when they are babies.

Maybe they would let you, I took my duckling to the nursing home once I carried him in a dog crate and when we would get to a room to visit I would take him out, I had a diaper harness for him.

Hope Dad is feeling good.
