The African and Chinese goose thread!!

Hi clmschke glad to see an update on one of Molly's kids that hatched this year. I am assuming if the terrible highway didn't get the other two that they are also named after Frozen characters. Is big brother Albus and sister Adele still being body guards and driving y'all crazy ?
Also how is Percy, has he finally been knocked from being head gander or is he still giving his sons a run for their money ?
Also on a final question, since you have 11 ganders I was wondering do you have any problems with them mating with your peking ducks during mating season ?
Molly hatched out 5 kids, 2 were sold to a lady up near Wisconsin Dells. She's got Albus and Adele helping her with the kids which I named Aberforth, Wulfric and Ariana. She has been known to steer close to the road, but I've learned a trick to keep them away. Take a big colorful umbrella, stand between them and the road, open and close it. They freak out and go running. I got the idea from Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade.

Our newest kids are Fred and George: We are resurrecting those names since the first Fred and George both died of respiratory illness years ago. These two were hatched 2 weeks ago. Percy's girls are interested, but not enough to adopt. They are insistent that I remain Mama goose for them. Percy is still head of his flock of girls with the addition of Elsa this year. Luna has taken over Momhood for her.

I took a photo of Elsa today. Last night we took off the bandage. She had on that bandage for what...3 days?

I watched her extend and move the wing twice this morning and it went back to resting position just fine.

The flock of over 20+ geese are still self-divided into three smaller flocks: Molly and her brood, Percy and his girls, Ron and his offspring -Penny, Nelly, Sissysan, Ronson and 2 kids this year: Lumpy and a 3 week old with no name. The bachelors Sweet Pea, Gingi and Buddy hang with Ron's group. I suspect George is Buddy's kid, since there is a bit of Toulouse look about him/her.

The only gander that tried to mate with the ducks was Percy. He had this thing for Daisy for so long, until she got attacked by a rooster who left her with a bum leg. When we realized she was not going to heal fully from the leg, we consigned her to the freezer. That left Vito the drake without a mate, so we got him Appollonia.

Sounds like the makings of a soap opera, doesn't it?

As the World Turns! Too funny!

These are my Chinese crosses (I think). One of them has started developing lobes (I think) but I've heard Chinese don't have lobes? Also, the white one is much bigger and has a higher pitched voice, the grey one has a deep honk and isn't afraid to use it. Any chance the grey one has turned female? (Previously identified as male in this thread)

Hi again Lina. Your babies have grown some!!! Very pretty, too. As you say, being cross-breeds, it can muddle things up a bit, but looking at your pic, I´d say the brown-grey one looks very feminine. Looking at the white one, I wouldn´t like to say, but if you´re noticing a big difference in their voices, then that´s a good one to go by. Sometimes, though, the crosses can have some strange voices, being a mix between european and asiatic. One of my neighbours here has a gander that sounds like a giant spring going off! Doioioing, doioioing!
Thanks for updating us, they´re looking lovely.

ps I just looked at your white in another thread you posted..looks totally like a male.

Thanks! I think they are adorable. I just added some more photos to that old thread here. Let me know what you think! I don't know what these type of geese are supposed to sound like, but they are pretty ridiculous sounding (and very loud!) I have really fallen in love with them, they follow me around and the grey one lets me pick him up every day. It's too cute.

I took this of Angel yesterday. Her eyes are blue. Is that normal?
400

That's her baby ducks in the background. How long will she mother them? They are 4 months old.

Your lovely grey looks goose to me, note the developing egg pouch/sag hens develop. Low voices usually mean hen too. Your white looks very gander to me, and a handsome one at that! None of my ganders have the sagging belly the goose hens do.

Yes, my white chinese are very blue eyed, just love the expressions you can read from their eyes. My momma white chinese goose (named Angel also) is still mothering the first gosling born in April, and he is bigger than she is! I have a brown gander that immediately adopts any gosling he sees. We have around 45 geese now and that pair grabs up every one and raises them..
They seem to watch them nonstop, so am clueless as to when they will send them off to be adults. This is my first year allowing them to raise their own babies.
