The African and Chinese goose thread!!

I told that person the same thing on a different thread.

I am searching thru this tread because I got (supposedly ) 2 African geese via my local Agway. I was wondering when they got their African geese features . I am thinking I did not get Africans. As I ordered a few Indian runner ducks & got Pekings. I got them on June 13th this yr ( 2014 )

Welcome to BYC! Its a fantastic source of info, I am totally hooked.
Love your enclosure, your babies are very lucky!

A lot of people ask me that and it is very hard to explain for me haha but they both have features males should have for that breed.
The Chinese structure and walks like a male
and i see it in their face

Swan type geese are very easy to identify for males and females .
exactly.. I look at the face, and the neck, body structure. Hens necks are shorter, body is lower to the ground. Adults are super easy, the hens always have a hanging fleshy area on their belly, my ganders bellies are smooth. Hens also have lower voices, ganders shriek and its a higher tone. Ganders are normally a larger bird as adults.

Quote: Its not a bad thing... I have more gander than goose right now, not including babies. Those boys surround and protect the hens, and usually the dominant male is the only one she mates with. Its a very short window for breeding season, and the rest of the year they are just part of my flock. I keep a lot of geese to help alert my other birds to predators and tell me that someone/thing is not supposed to be here.

I will get pictures later this morn. I don't know which hatchery Agway here deals with. Last yr I was suppose to get 6 crested Indian runner ducks. Got white crested Pekins. This yr I was suppose to get regular Indian runners & got to Pekins. So I am doubting that my geese are African.

Hoping your Dad gets home & has more time to enjoy his life..

My geese are such a source of entertainment..but also this breed is so noisy. I always had Toulouse before & they are much quieter. My Chinese brown or Africkan whatever they are..
are loud noisy critters.

I pick weeds for them in the AM & they stand at the gate & honk like crazy while waiting for me. Then will follow me across the yard as I spread the weeds. Of course then I am expected

to stand there & hold the weeds at nibbling level for a time while they choose the tastiest buds off of the stalks! Spoiled?? nah..just particular!

Praying for you & your family!!

Yhis is my 1st time having geese ( when I was a young teen we had 1 goose ) I got the African, as I liked their different 'look' . I will say, they are very noisy. and when the 8 ducks chime in. Holy moly. Nothing like letting the predators know they are around

I have 1 gander to 7 geese. I was supposed to have 2 ganders, but one of the boys turned out to be a girl, who is now laying eggs, lol. My gander thinks he is in heaven with all these ladies, and every so often he needs a good kick in the pants to remind him he isn't as big as he thinks he is. My main concern is for my kids and mom (who is sick with cancer), I can't allow him to get too aggressive and hurt them. He knows better than to try his crap around me though, he gets pinned, then locked in time out away from his haram.

I too use them as "watch dogs". Just yesterday I returned home, parked next to were the geese were napping in the shade and they looked but didn't honk, until a lady across the street walked over and then they made a huge racket. They know who belongs in their yard and who doesn't. They allow my cat Patches to wonder around, as long as she keeps her distance, but they have chased off other cats. They are perfect protection for my chickens and ducks. I have learned the difference between their mating calls and their alarm calls. As soon as we hear the alarm calls we run out to see what's the matter. Thankfully, it's mostly people walking down the street, or the mailman, no predators have tried to get any of my flock yet (knock on wood).

Pictures will help a lot. My Chinese don't get the hump on their beak until late into the first year. my "africans" were obvious Chinese mix, from Meyer hatchery. Disappointed but they are still adorable and gorgeous birds. They are only slightly taller than my white chinese gander.

I know I had read something about them getting their characteristics somewhere on here, just have to keep going thru the treads . TY EV1
