The African and Chinese goose thread!!

Pinkchic, I did some research on your question about the dewlap. What I read was depending on the individual goose the Dewlap can start to form between 6 months and 18 months and fully developed at 3 years of age. Read this at yardlyfarms.com.

The only predator that challenge goose here is coyote and stray dogs, both will wipe out a flock. I pen my flock at night behind a fence. Sounds to me you are aware of what predators to watch for!

My main concern are all the dang strays around here. They are aggressive, but don't even try to come into my yard any more. The last time they came in our yard, they had cornered my cat Patches and were trying to kill her. I went after them with a long galvanized water pipe I had just pulled from our shower (bathroom remodel), and they have never come back. Which is good as I now have a pistol and will shoot to kill. I have also plugged the hole in our fence that they were using to get in. The strays didn't even bother us when my female Siberian Husky went into heat, so I think my yard is secure.

We hear coyotes at night and find skunk and possum road kill about a 2 miles up the road, but not in our area. I think the dang strays keep those pests away. I'd rather deal with the stray dogs and cats, than skunk, possum, coyote, and most likely raccoon. Better to fight 2 pests than a bunch and I know what cats and dogs are capable of. (I have 6 dogs, 4 inside cats, and 1 outside cat) I also lock my flock up at night. The chickens have their own separate coop, the geese and ducks are together until I can finish building the ducks their own private house. So far I have had 0 losses to predation. I check my fences and coops every night and always listen to what my geese are "saying" lol.

Haha they probely talk about you XD
I would worry more about stray dogs then raccoons and skunks because they only really eat the eggs and not the geese.
Here where i live we have no stray dogs anywhere but our main pred is foxes and boy are they smart feckers! One year i lost over 60 chickens to 3 foxes and at one stage it was normal for them to walk past the field gate and go infront of the house to collect dead chickens! But now i have a Germanshepherd cross that chases them off :)
I do must admit they are very beautiful animals foxes

Lol, they do. I am the crazy critter lady in my neighborhood. But I give eggs to my immediate neighbors, and the old ladies across the street love sitting on their porch and just watching the geese, lol. We watch out for eachother.

I feel bad for the strays, it's their "owners" who I'd like to smack, but the dogs are just too aggressive. They chased my kids and I home when we first purchased the house and tried to go for a walk. Since then I have treated the strays as dangerous, take no chances with the safety of my kids or animals.

I have never seen an attack by a coon, possum, skunk, ect. But I have read about them in these threads. I hope to never have to go through it. I had hoped to train my Belgain Malinois as a flock guardian, but he thinks chicken is what's for dinner, so that was a no go. All I can do is prey that the geese will sound the alarm and I can get there in time to protect my flock. :fl

Ok..here's one for all of us geese crazy folk!

I changed my shoes! I have worn white deck shoes all summer..tonite I grabbed a pair of dark brown slip ons...like clogs.

My gander took one look at my feet and almost attacked me!! The goose was running around with her head down focused on those shoes!!

From their line of sight I guess a change like that is scary or intimidating??

We will see what happens when I show up in my winter mucklucks!!

Just a funny tale from down here at Stonebound Acres!~!

I always wear flip flops in the summer and 99% of the time have red toe nails. I really messed with balance of things when I changed the polish color. I think all 75 birds tried to taste my toes.
