Quote: I take food and water to my broodies, especially the last week. I watch them very close so there is no chance of that happening. Always provide a bucket of water, so she can dunk her head. They do this to clear nasal passages and groom.

I have ate goose before, and did like it. My 10 are pets, but we do plan to raise some for the table also. We added Embden for that reason, they are a massive bird and grow fast. I wound up selling all out last year, and DH was peeved at me! This year we just didn't have any hatch, but the embden are still laying.. still hopeful we might get a few more geese.I'll be doing the same for my ladies whenever they decide to lay/sit. (I am going to really enjoy baking with those first eggs however.)
My trio are permanent residents for us.
Their offspring... selling some, roasting some. I run a practical farm. Not every animal is a pet.
Oh yes~I plan on adding another pair or trio next year, either of super africans or of Buffs.
I adore both roasted duck and goose... and the excess fatis just so good! It's truly GOLD in the kitchen.![]()
No one seems to breed them around here, I sell out so fast. I don't understand why either. They are a little intimidating to folks that don't understand the body language. Thats the whole key to it, they bluff. If you don't back down you can easily control them. The "mean" birds just need picked up and taught manners. It will probably depend on how my DH handles the 'honking' of my current trio...![]()
I have a real soft spot for the chinese/africans. Don't know why... maybe all those times I got chased as a kid before my mom's friend showed me how to puff my little self up and throw my arms out and walk right back at them. LOL
Those BIG geese and I eventually became friends, but it was a bit of a rough start.
My little trio is beginning to show a little bit of skin lap under the throat. It's so exciting!
So, if DH thinks the noise from this trio is just a bit much I'll add a few sexed Buffs, which I understand are a good deal quieter. And a lovely big goose too. Be nice to breed, keep a small flock of, some that need a little help in that department as well.
I just love watching the pool party! My kids still use a pool... I gave it a good scrub today, flipped it over and refilled it. Good lord they were so excited about some really, really, CLEAN water. I think they frolicked and preened for a good half hour straight. Then were back in and out of it for the rest of the afternoon. They LOVE pool washing day!
It is definitely going to be time for a larger pool soon... just in time for the clearance isles! WOOT!
Oh, and they are shedding feathers out everywhere again... first feather shed post fuzzy.
