The African and Chinese goose thread!!

My young trio is now doing the running flapping practices with real wings, and not getting anywhere other than the ground. It's sweet... but not as adorable as when they were fuzzies and would flap about with the little wing stubs and stumble over their giant feet!

oh my, i adore the goslings sooo much! Bath time was my 2nd favorite with the diving, crazy babies! Cuddle time with them is absolutely 1st with the nuzzles and trills they make when warm and content.

My young ones are getting so big, and starting to try out their honking when talking to each other... but it makes me super happy when I go out to call them up for to let them out in the morning, or to put them in, or just for treats, and they still peep and trill at me.

Lol in a month they will be yelling at u woth big honks. Just like teens...

Oh my, his head is at my waist, but I am about 5 feet tall. I can, and do pick him up but he is heavy, so maybe 20- 25 pounds about, but thats a guess? (I can lift 50 lbs of feed but its not easy for me, thats half my weight LOL).
Yes, you should be seeing goslings next spring! They are the most precious thing, and its easy to imprint with daily handling if momma doesn't get too upset. Every hen reacts differently, I take eggs early in the season so my hens do not much like me that time of year. Once the risk of frozen eggs passes I let them hatch their own.
My only hatch so far this season, now living with my oldest DD. Brown chinese hen, just a precious baby!
Wow, that is huge. My gander is about 9 pounds right now, but he's young. Is it easy to sell young african geese on craigslist or something?

I usually have a waiting list, lol! Just local folks that know me, and people from our state thread on BYC. There doesn't seem to be many people that raise geese around my area. I find that surprising since my neighbor and I both do.
Oh good for you! You must raise them well. I don't know anyone that currently raises geese. I wonder if a local newspaper ad would attract people.

Quote: My best contact is a good friend that works at the tractor supply store. I got to know her since I am in for feed every week. She gives out my number, and I get a lot of local business that way. Craigslist is an option, but there is some weird people out there too, I avoid it mostly. Local newspaper would be a good option too I think.

Okay, thanks for the info. I'll just have to see how many hatch next spring. I have heard of some peoples geese dying while on the nest from starvation, how do you stop that from happening?

I got my trio via a CL add... the people had gotten them further north a bit and already had some teen ducks who did NOT approve of the goslings, so I'm the re-homing.
The only other geese I've ever seen listed in my area were adult breeding pairs, and I wanted to raise some myself so that they would be good and friendly... plus, not being around geese since a young age myself I didn't want to get taken on the age of a pair as being 'young' then having them be quite old instead. Some of the people on CL aren't breeders so much as 'horsetraders' and are about as honest as far as you could throw them. Of course I'm not saying everyone that lists there... but it's hard to know who to trust.
