The African and Chinese goose thread!!

I have 3 geese two boys one girl.One gander has been excluded and now has joined up with my ducks who are learning to cooperate with the goose.We think he is trying to be more like mates other than just friends,but he is defiantly learning how to get along,it is his only option or he could keep fighting.

Today I locked him up with the ducks instead of the other 2 because the other Gander just harass him.He also wen to bed with the ducks (i hope this goes well.)

My question is,can he go on his whole life like this or will he eventually keep fighting the other Gander for the girl and leadership.

Aww thanks Bottom left is my lil old girl, Angel. The rest are last years goslings. 1 brown Chinese, 4 Embden and one Buff/Brown Chinese cross. I am terrible at taking pics, please excuse the finger bottom left too!!

Those are beautiful, and the picture is not bad. You should see how many pictures I take to get 1 to post. And even then they are not always good. Next year I would love to have a couple girls for the boys. But of course that would mean goslings and my property is not that large. But I can dream Thanks for sharing your geese. Linda

You will have to let them establish a flock pecking order. Yes, they may fight. There may even be blood drawn. Your best option is to add another goose hen. If thats not possible, then let them fight and be a referee. It sounds cruel, I know. And its very unsettling. We have to allow our birds to interact naturally. Don't infringe human thinking onto goose pecking order, its a totally different animal than us! Your 2nd gander does need a mate, or a friend.

We have a lot less waterfowl than this picture now. 11 geese, 8 pekin, 1 mallard and 3 scovys. I had a large mallard flock and fox wiped them out within 2 days last spring

. My little mallard hen is so mean, even the geese won't bother her! If I confine the mallards they won't thrive. She has attached to our pekin flock. I expect her to leave in the spring since we don't have a drake. I do not trim wings. With our situation I want my birds to have ability of flight.

Linda, Thank you! I am not sure what you have property wise. We have 5 acres here, but my waterfowl stay in our pond 90% of the day. We have a lot less waterfowl than this picture now. 11 geese, 8 pekin, 1 mallard and 3 scovys. I had a large mallard flock and fox wiped them out within 2 days last spring . We have more of a raccoon problem here. That's a very peaceful picture. I have the 2 geese ( ganders ? ), 2 Blu Swis drakes, 4 Pekin ducks, 4 Welsh ducks, 1 drake, 2 Runner ducks 1 drake and about 30 chickens ( bantam and lg fowl ). All on about 1.5 acres cleared out of heavy woods. No pond only kiddie pools. But I will get them mates sometime.

We decided on calling the lady who gave us the 3 and asking her for a female,either that or returning the Gander and replacing him for a girl,although I like this Gander much better then our Main Gander Popeye.

@TheTwoRoos. Getting a female from same place you got these from is a great idea. I hope she is able to tell the goose from the gander. My cousin got 4 geese from a woman. Was supposed to be a gander and 3 geese. Turned out to be a goose and 3 ganders. It is so hard to tell with some breeds and mixed breeds.

I have a question......if a Toulouse goose is with several ganders (African and Chinese) then taken away, she lays eggs for a week. Can those eggs be fertile by different ganders?? Could some hatch 1/2 Toulouse/African And another hatch 1/2 Toulouse/Chinese ???

We believe the second accidental Gander was younger the the purpose Gander, because the accident boy looked just like a goose.

I think she has been dealing with geese for awhile. She told us all the info and was honest with us about Chinese, both good and the bad side. She also talked about the difference between the male and female.

Today I noticed my itty bitty Khaki girl running at the exiled Gander,I'm hoping it is just a pecking order thing, she has been bossy her whole life.
