The African and Chinese goose thread!!

Awwww, they are gorgeous!

And look what Ninya did today! Her egg is in the upper right.

Clockwise compared to an Australorp chicken, a quarter, a pullet egg and three bantie eggs.

I wasn't home when she laid her egg. Do geese sing an egg song like my chickens?
Did you dye them? that is a big egg ,looking forward to my gooses first egg.

Bhonkers, pretty pics!!!

Nana, congrats on the egg!!

Here's a pic of my group... I am seeing pairing up and some breeding activity, but no eggs... then again, they could be buried under 1.5ft of snow.

Great photo...could be a postcard with red ribbons photoshopped on their necks.. Nice to know they will get out in the snow.

Now that Ninya is laying, it has been every other day. Will this continue thru winter or will she slack off?

Since she had a slipped tendon, I'm thinking this could be hereditary. Thus I'm thinking she should not cover a set of her own eggs. About when in the spring do geese go broody? I want to be prepared. I could possibly find a source for goose eggs for Ninya to hatch so she can mother babies. Please offer advice.

I hoped that someone with more experience was going to jump on this question. (NanaKat, you may want to post it as a new thread if you dont get any advice here, so that maybe more people will see your question)

Here was my experience - keep in mind that I've only had geese since this April: My chinese goose layed every other day in October, layed a total of, I'd say 12 eggs, and then stopped laying. She hasnt layed anymore since, and the droopy pouch between her legs (that was very noticeable during her laying days) is now less droopy.

As far as broodiness, for her first 3 eggs, she'd lay them and leave (at which point I'd take them). Then she started building a nest in the same spot and covering her egg with grass, and would leave. She got broody for the last eggs she layed, stayed on the nest all day. Had to pick her up and carry her into their coop at dusk. She was still broody for the next 3 days, even though her nest was empty, and she wasnt laying. After that, she seemed to have forgotten about her nest and hung out with the gander all day, grazing like they did before.
