The Aloha Chicken Project

Deerfield I'm glad you got your power back on. Thats the only thing I dont like about hatching in the spring, power outages are quite frequent around here. Most last less than 5 minutes, so we are lucky there.

This is the worst we've ever had, even with ice outages, but ours can last a couple hours, thus the generator on hand. 5 minutes is still unnerving when you have chicks in the incubator! I bought one of those Hovabators you can plug into a car battery in case of outages. So that's a little peace of mind.

Hey Everybody - PLEASE READ THIS and PM me if you need more info!

I don't want to post anything before it's a "go" but it looks like Alohas are about to get some major national exposure this Summer.

Draye - hang on to ALL the spotty Aloha chicks - PLEASE. If you don't want to raise that many, I have a serious feeling there will be someone else who will. Also - Draye - please call the spotty Naked Necks that you hatch from my Aloha stock "Aloha Naked Necks" to give credit to my breeding program. Thanks! (That way if someone likes the pretty spots but not the Naked Necks, they will know to look to getting some Alohas.)

Everyone else - 5moore, Deerfield, HEChicken - please hatch and save all possible Alohas to supply new breeders who might be interested, because unfortunately with it being June when this info about the breed is released - it is the WORST possible time in Phoenix. My hens won't be laying, and it will be impossible to ship chicks until late October or maybe even November.

So it's up to you Midwest folks to help out new Aloha fans! Start hatching and saving Alohas now. Prepare yourself for a possible flood of new interest in the breed that might hit this summer? I won't be able to help that time of year, my hands will be tied due to the terrible Phoenix summer heat, argh!!

This *could* be a pretty big deal - and it might jump start the Aloha interest in a big way - I really don't know??? Just be prepared.

If anyone else on here who has a few hens is looking for a "boost" of eggs to hatch - and grow their Aloha flocks - this could be a really good time to get some from me and start working on that. (HINT HINT.)

I can do that. I was just thinking there might need a separation between the Alohas and NN's, for the folks that don't like NN's. I was however going to tell folks about them coming from the Aloha program. But I will call them Aloha NN for you and give you credit for the development of them.

I really appreciate your getting me these eggs. Looks like I lost one today, it had a problem with the leg. It looked like it was bent and locked in the bended position.

I'm hanging on to about half of the Alohas for outcrosses. If you should know of anyone my way wanting any send them to me.

If you can try to hang onto them until May / June we should be able to find a home for them at that point, I would imagine?

Here are photos of the teenagers. The white one is kind of interesting. I thought he had dirt on his chest, but it's a "leakage" of brown pigment.

This would be BAD if we were trying for the White color with the dark neck - but GOOD news for the Aloha program! Since we do NOT want his silvery-white color. Just his massive size and yellow legs. It looks like already the Aloha color is trying to escape. Ha ha!

He still towers above the other Alohas. If he can just stay alive in the hot summer, I can't wait to cross him to my small, super-spotty girls and try to see if he can produce chicks that inherit some of his size and nice thick type - but with the spotty Aloha color.

Above: Here he is next to a nicely colored "normal" sized Aloha rooster.

Here he is next to an Aloha Turken hen of the same age.
Note: the Naked Neck hen is not particularly small. He's just that HUGE.

Better pics of the weird colored spot. This boy is such a CHUNK.

This particular Naked Neck Aloha has GREAT color.

The rooster that I liked a lot - who was BIG but not as big as the silvery-white guy and had spotting and yellow legs - he is still looking good! I just couldn't get a decent photo him this session, darn it. Will try again later. A few were "posing" for me and others were hiding. LOL.

I have only 2 Aloha hens that are grown and no rooster. But I have 2 other Buff Sussex/Aloha crosses that are solid colors. So I could use an Aloha roo, if I could get my hands on one. Anyone have an extra Aloha cock of mating age?
