Oh - and wanted to add - I did hatch out 17 chicks from the 2 breeding pens -
and while the MAJORITY of the eggs in the next "group" of eggs collected were blanks (infertile) there are about 30-40 eggs that *are* developing!
I should (hopefully) hatch 15-25 more chicks to raise on Jan 13th.
Now I'm starting to mark which eggs came from which pen - as I collect them - so I can determine if the son of the blue eyed hen is having more issues, or if the new younger rooster who is big with all the white, if he's having problems? I did see the younger (#1) rooster cover a hen yesterday, one of the very colorful Aloha girls, so she should be laying fertile eggs for the next two weeks now - yay! I bet we will see some lovely super colorful hens, though the roos from that cross may not be as big as I'd want.
Anyway, I'll be marking the eggs and testing the next batch, and if rooster #1 is having issues, I will then pull 2 or 3 more hens from the pen - if I don't just go ahead and do that sooner?
But there ARE chicks to raise - so that's good. The 17 babies that I'm raising for myself have huge size differences, with the largest being almost twice as large as the smallest.
Two of the very BIG chicks are already showing light color plus good amounts of white - seriously hoping for a couple of nice big colorful boys!!!
