The Ameraucana Thread: Where everything and anything about the breed can be discussed (APA, Non-Stan

What an awesome coop/run! That is heavy duty! I don't think any critters will be breaking into it anytime soon. Great job! Love the color combination as well. Black is sooo much better than white, we learned that the hard way!

Thank you! And I hope not! We haven't lost any birds to critters yet, and I hope not to start =) It is welded wire, and steel poles, so it should be sturdy. I would have loved to have white, but where we live, it just wouldn't be practical.

Hello All, I have two Ameraucana chicks that I bought at TSC that are aproximately 4 weeks old today. I was wondering if you can help me figure out if they are roosters or hens? I'm not sure if that is possible based on their coloring, but I thought it might be worth asking. I have labeled the two in question. The one on the left is a red/brown/black combo, and the other is a white, brown, black combo. The blurry white one is also an Ameraucana but I'm pretty sure she is a hen. Thank you for any possible information.
Hello there and

!! It's really hard to tell much from this picture. To get a better idea of the sex we would need to see a close up of at least the birds combs to judge their size and color.

Tractor supply purchases all their birds from hatcheries and hatcheries are notorious for selling birds under the title of Ameraucana when they aren't. Most likely your birds are non-standard Ameraucanas or Easter Eggers. I think the white one is the only bird you have that could possibly be a true Ameraucana based on coloring. The chances are slim though. Ameraucanas only come in 8 standard colors: Buff, White, Black, Silver, Brown-Red, Wheaten, Blue, Blue-Wheaten. They also have to have a pea comb and slate colored legs. If your birds don't pocess any of these traits they will be considered EE's and their is nothing wrong with that. EE's are wonderful birds you just can't show them as Ameraucanas. Feel free to ask any more questions in relation to this subject. There are many knowlegable memebers on this thread that will be able to answer them!

They look like pullets, but those are very pretty EEs, nit ameraucanas. Oh, My oldest, brown egg layer ameraucana went broody! She is brooding on wood though. If I move her, will that break her of her broodiness?

You can never tell with broodies. Can you handle the bird normally and does she trust you? I would leave her on wood and move her at night to where you want her to brood her eggs. If she accepts the move you can put real eggs under her. If she doesn't - she may go back to the original nest or she may quit. My two recent broodies both accepted the move with no qualms (one Silver Phoenix, one Blue Silkie). My mothers birds go crazy and eat all the eggs - but she doesn't handle them and they are OEG birds - not the pet kind - for sure!

I love my eastercaunas. Here are a couple

The EE's are such nice birds. I have made dibs on five blue purebred Americaunas (in the incubator now), but they will never displace my lovely EE's

How can you tell that they are not Americaunas? I don't mind either way because I was just hoping for multi-colored eggs, but I'd love to know the difference. It would be a relief if they are in fact pullets since I'm pretty sure one of my Barred Plymouth Rocks is a roo.
