The Ameraucana Thread: Where everything and anything about the breed can be discussed (APA, Non-Stan

Where do you begin? I've been told my LF barred cochin is a cockerel. Could I cross it to my white pullet above and get some very fluffy bearded EE?
That will work.Fluff and feather legs but for ee that's ok.I used hatchery barred rock cock over black and blue ameraucana hens.Third generation and some fourth generation in the incubator now.Mine are a serious effort to create a cuckoo ameraucana.Barring creates spotted legs with slate but some have slate legs.I expect to get more slate legs each generation. If you would like to join in on a serious effort I could share eggs/chicks next year.I will have to get some new pics to post.Take a look at lavender cuckoo thread and barred ee threads. Some said slate legs with sex linked barring was impossible but I had my doubts.Difficult yes.Once the right genes are in place I think it will breed true.

Fascinating...

I would loved to get involved. What kind of set up would I need to have prepared for them? I have several small coops I can use to breed in.

Small coops can work. You will need good quality blacks to improve them.Well maybe not as I will use a Smith bred black cockerel {from DAK} next year over some of these. The more breeders the better.

Here are some new pics. The cock is over 1 year and still has slate legs.He was the first male to not turn to spotted legs. The pullet is 5 months and has been laying about a month. She lays a nice blue egg.I have produced mostly single barred males due to mating back to blacks for type and egg color.I have several cockerels with slate legs but will wait until after 6 months of age to see if they stay slate.I feel I have made good progress.I feel I got a lucky break on the odds.I would not have pursued this project except some said it was impossible.I could not resist.I had to try before I was convinced. As you can see I don't believe impossible.

If I post my birds will you tell me what i can do to improve them?
Post them please. I'm sure someone can help you.
