It depends upon the quality and originating line.  For example, Greenfire line eggs are averaging about $75-100 each.  Toni-Marie Astin around the same.  Jordan Farms line were going for $75 each but I have not seen those at auction for a while.  But I am giving away Mike Bean's Smithsonian eggs for free.  So that makes them about $11-15 per dozen (which is the cost of shipping).

Hello everyone,

I have just gotten done reading your thread and wanted to thank you all for keeping it interesting and leaving me wanting more.
I just hatched out a small batch of chicks that were supposed to be a breeding mistake between an escaped Mottled Orpington Roo over a pure Cemani Hen...
Assumption on my part was that a Mottled Orp would show up somewhere on at least one of the five chicks(?)
Would anyone please be kind enough to give their feedback of this chick and tell me whatever thoughts come to mind? I would sincerely appreciate it.
My wonderment is bordering frustration with not knowing.
Here is the clearest pic I could get...

Hatched out yesterday.

Thanks,

Meg

It looks like a nice chick. However, if it is a cross, it will probably grow up and have lots of color leakage on the feathers. But it should be a good start if you are planning to raise black meat birds as English Orpingtons usually gain weight fast.

A cross, however, can never be a pure Cemani and should not be referred to it as such. A better term to use is "FM" as it is not specific to a pure breed like Ayam Cemani, Svart Hona, Ogye, etc. FM is the gene that causes the black skin (hyper-pigmentation).

Also keep in mind that even pure Ayam Cemani should not be judged until they are adults. Feathers and nails grow out differently than when they are chicks. So you might think you have a perfect Cemani. But then it gets its adult feathers and you have silver or copper leakage, making it a cull and not suitable for breeding. That's why I usually only recommend people buy adult birds and not chicks or eggs. It is less expensive in the long run than growing out lots of chicks and having to cull as adults for a breeding pair.

Hughess- it is a very nice looking cemani leaning looking chick! The haffies I have that look more orpington have yellow/white mottled legs and seversl white/silver leakage spots in the coloring, it's very noticeable.

It's great that so many hatched! Excellent job!

From what I understand...
If a mottled cockerel was the father, the chick would have some yellow on his chest /belly area even as a carrier on only one gene.
Also as mottle has dermal pigment inhibitors, the legs would not be uniformly black.

Later on a chick with one mottle gene would look black except for the white patches on the legs.

Yours looks pure Cemani!

Could NOT have done it without you guys!

What are the chances your chicks are from a cemani x cemani mating and not a cross?
I don't see any indication of the mottling gene
I wish I knew Boykin.
Don't quote me, but I believe the breeder, or an associate, stated that the Roo was 'free' for only about a half an hour...so slim I would think.
I didn't see any mottling 'anything' either and other breeder's pictures are just confusing me more. Lol.
Not knowing I would get such a quick response from the breeder I had to reach out to you guys because you guys (as well as the breeder) I trust.
At first I didn't want the responsibility involved with owning this breed...but after being so unsure after they hatched, I will admit, I was a little bummed out. This would have been an excellent journey.
